Eureka Springs, Arkansas

During winter break my friend Stacey came down to visit and we went to Eureka Springs, Arkansas for the day! Eureka Springs is a little Victorian town in the northern part of the state and is really popular destination for romantic weekend getaways. It’s filled with bed and breakfasts, spas, restaurants, and lot of little local shops lining its streets.

Stacey and I arrived there in the morning with nothing much on the agenda. We went to the famous haunted Crescent Hotel. Although it has a reputation for being haunted, it’s also a hot spot for weddings. I personally know two couples who got married. It’s a beautiful building setting at the top of the city.

On the grounds is Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic church, which happens to be the only church in America that you enter through the bell tower. It’s worth visiting if you’re in Eureka Springs because it’s at the Crescent Hotel and it’s free. However, it’s much prettier from the outside than the inside.

After going through the church and the hotel we decided to walk down through the town and hit all of the local shops. The narrow streets wind back and forth up the side of this hill. There are all kinds of shops including boutiques, a bead shop, a toy store, kitchen shops, a yarn shop and many others. Many of the sides of the brick building have the remnants of vintage shop signs; they’re a beautiful part of this city’s look.

Another thing that Eureka Springs is known for is their rendition of The Great Passion Play. It’s put on every spring, and they also have a replica of The Christ Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s simply “Christ of the Ozarks”. It’s visible from the upper porch of the Crescent Hotel.

Eureka Springs has many festivals and is a perfect getaway destination for a girls weekend, a day away from home or a romantic getaway with your significant other. If you’re passing through Northern Arkansas it’s definitely worth stopping in.
