Food Envy- New Orleans Edition

Anytime Stacey and I go places together we eat… and we usually eat a lot!  It all started when I went to visit Stacey while she was studying abroad in Florence, Italy three years ago and we still aren’t full yet!

The Cafe du Monde is a New Orleans MUST.  If you’re going to get beignets, why not go to this NOLA legend?  Many people may see this as a “tourist trap”, but even the locals that I talked to said that it is a must.  This inexpensive stop is the perfect place to get your powdered-sugar/coffee fix!

Seriously, look at all of that powdered sugar!  Crazy delicious!

Our first meal was a Muffaletta from the River Market Cafe; the perfect lunch stop for us while exploring the French Quarter.

This delicious (and massive) sandwich is made from mortadella, olive salad, ham, mozzarella and provolone… It was delicious, but also massive!  We could have split half of a sandwich!

Our first dinner was at Mulate’s, which was really delicious. Stacey had dinner here the last time she was in New Orleans, and was really eager to return.  I had red beans and rice, and Stacey had jambalaya.  Then, of course, we had some really awesome cocktails here!  Juleps are a must for me when in New Orleans.

Something really great about this restaurant was the cute folk band and the dance floor!  A really sweet old couple pulled us on the dance floor (after our failed attempt at dancing) and showed us how to really dance.  Then, a bit later, we attempted to show another old couple what the first one had showed us.  It ended up being an evening of great fun and laughs.

After dinner, we went fur Bourbon Street, which, we thought was kinda awful.  It was just a ton of middle-aged, wasted tourists… However, we managed to find a really calm bar to grab a beer.

My Couchsurfing Host from Mobile had told me to eat at Juan’s Flying Burrito, so we gave it a shot!  We split a delicious burrito and I had the strongest double margarita ever… That’s your warning.

We found a really great little spot in the Garden District near our hostel called Avenue Cafe.  We actually ate here twice because we loved it so much!

Stacey got a bagel and mate!

I had a vegan cinnamon roll and fresh squeezed apple juice!

Avenue Cafe take two on our last morning for breakfast!

I had a parmesan and prosciutto roll with the best fruit cup ever!

We were starving after our cemetery tour, and we found Pere Antoine’s very quickly and thought it sounded good!  We were not wrong!  We got the Fromage Creole for an appetizer.  We were a bit surprised when we saw it, but were not disappointed when we ate it.  It. Was. Tasty.

Then we split the vegetarian pasta with the Creole Sauce.  Holy Toledo!  It was so, so, so good!  It was a really hefty portion, and even between the two of us we couldn’t finish it.

Clearly, Stacey and I know how to eat!  I can’t wait to show you more foods I ate and more experiences from the South!
