Graveyard Fields, North Carolina

I don’t think it’s possible to take a trip to Asheville without visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains/The Parkway. (As you can see from my first and second trip to Asheville.) Plus, there are so many different areas to explore that it’s been a genuinely new experience for me each time.

On this trip we drove in a completely different direction on the parkway than I had before because it was spring and more of it was finally open! So we made our way south towards Looking Glass Rock. I love driving on the parkway. Being able to see all of these seamless, mountains with various shades of blue and gray that seem to stretch on and on forever makes me feel at peace. We passed looking glass rock, which sticks up over 1,200 feet in the middle of the mountains and it was so cool to be able to see, from above, where we had visited Looking Glass Falls on my previous visit to Asheville.

Graveyard Fields got its name because the trees in the area had blown down in a windstorm leaving behind stumps to look like gravestones, but it was burned and the stumps are no longer there, leaving only an eerie name behind.

There are two waterfalls in this area- Upper Falls (1.6 miles) and Second Falls (.02 miles). We walked down to Second Falls which is across wooden boardwalks and down stairs to the base off the falls. At the base is a bit of a pool that, when it’s warmer, people swim in.

After hanging out around there for a bit, we started towards Upper Falls. We wandered through the trails and went off course a few times, going to the river, I was taking pictures of the tiny details on the trail, and had to be back in Asheville, so while we made it about halfway or more to the Upper Falls, I have yet to see it! (However, it will be easy to go see it now that I live so close!)
