Guest Post: Not All Who Wander Are Lost

Liz is a really fantastic writer over at the blog Be Love Live.  She’s an American living in Sweden and I first started following her blog because of our shared love for travel, and the more we’ve followed each other’s blogs the more we’ve come to know each other and we have even started a friendship through this amazing blogging community.  Liz is one of those people who, even through tough times, is shining bright.  Sometimes, when I’ve been down or unmotivated I read one of Liz’s posts and she reminds me how remarkable this thing called life is.  So, everyone needs to head over to her blog and hit the follow-button.  Without any further delays here is Liz’s post, “Not All Who Wander Are Lost.”

Not All Who Wander Are Lost
.
hi! i’m liz. paige honored me by asking me to write a guest post for her lovely, inspiring blog, for the love of wanderlust. i immediately answered with an excited, “yes!” however, that was over a month ago, and i am just now getting my blog post to her. i’m a slacker. i know. but, better late than never, right? this is actually the first time that i’ve been asked to do a guest post, so you’d think i would be on the ball and would have had my post completed the next day. well, the only problem is i’ve been stuck. un-inspired. every time i opened up my computer to write about travel… crickets. nothing. and the only rule i had was to write something about travel… of course.
 .
but, you know what? i’m gonna write about something else.
 .
i’m thinking about getting a tattoo.
 .
well, another one. a sixth one, to be exact. i’ve been thinking about it for a while, but couldn’t decide what i wanted. sounds like i’m quite the indecisive person, eh?well, decisive or not, i know that it’s time to think about adding a new one. you see, tattoos are meaningful to me. they tell a story. they are symbolic. they are art. and they remind me of a specific time and place. there is a specific, very important meaning to each of the tattoos that i have. and all of them are a part of me, marking not only my body with ink, but marking it with a sacred remembrance of a change, transformation, or moment of understanding.
 .
but, i’ve made a decision. i know what i want.
 .
a compass.
.
 ,
now, here comes the travel connection. (i wouldn’t let you down, paige!).
 .
i had thought about a compass before a few months ago, but just in passing. in the past few days, though, i kept coming back to it. and now i know why. it is the perfect symbol for me at this point in my life.
 .
i’m a lover of travel. all kinds of travel. road trips. new countries. return trips to favorite places. restful, relaxing, do-nothing trips. group trips. day trips. month long journeys. pilgrimages. simple. luxury. planned. spontaneous. i am truly a fan of all kinds of travel.  i love to explore. see new people. eat different foods. really get into a culture or a place. visit little, local dives, markets, and boutiques. i love to drive my car across american and back again. i’ve done it twice. i love to fly and land in a completely foreign place where i do not understand anything.
.
.
.
 .
but, why? why do i love this roaming, wandering way of life? i think because i believe that travel brings peace. when we are willing to get out of comfort zones, relax a little, come face to face with people & places that are different from what we have know, then we grow more tolerant. and we learn. and we appreciate beauty. traveling is a necessary part of life. but, it doesn’t mean that we have to go to the other side of the world in order to experience things and be transformed. sometimes just going to the grocery store is an adventure in travel.
 .
.
.
so, my next tattoo is going to be a compass. in order to remind  me that i am a wanderer. that life is a continuous journey out into the world, one of exploring new places & people. but, the beauty of life is that it is also a journey inward. a never-ending journey exploring and discovering who we are and who we want to be.
.
yes. i choose a compass as my next tattoo. because it reminds me that i love to wander. i love to explore. i love to discover. and that, no matter how far i roam, or where i am, i am never, ever lost.

I have a passion for traveling as well….and you summed up the reasoning for it so beautifully. It’s funny, my next tattoo is also going to be a compass, one that I will design myself, and also my sixth. After that I want an anchor tattoo on the back of my heels, because as you wrote, when you travel, no matter where you are, you are not lost….the anchor to me, represents my soul…firm & secure…When a ship drops anchor, it grounds itself and secures itself to a certain spot from which it will not move. It stabilizes itself from the waves, tides, currents that the sea may throw at it. The anchor gives hope not to drift as we focus on new dreams and ideas. Anchors keep you grounded and focused on your vision, the horizon, where your new life and adventures await you. So some people tell me that the anchor contradicts the reasoning for my compass tattoo, but to me it compliments it. Can you see what I mean by that?
