How to Be More Spontaneous When Traveling

Post Contributed by Laura

Travelling is the greatest gift in the world, and I’ve been lucky enough to visit some incredible spots. But, it took me a while to learn how to be spontaneous. We all tend to visit a new country with a checklist in hand. An itinerary for every step of the journey. After all, you want to make sure you fit it all in, right? What I’ve discovered, over the years, that this approach doesn’t always work. Sometimes, places aren’t as great as advertised. Plus, you exhaust yourself trying to squeeze it all in. Instead, I’ve grown to embrace a spontaneous attitude to travelling. I let the road take me.

» Choose Flexible Accommodation

Some people need to plan out every night of their journey, and make sure things are booked in advance. I’ve met many people who are terrified at the thought of getting on a plane without a set plan! But, try it, just once, and you’ll never go back. Book your first night or two, but be flexible about the other nights! Then, you can move on to explore new towns along the way. Keep it cheap by using hostels or AirBnB rentals. If you love the first destination, then simply extend your accommodation. Simple.

» Only Plan One Thing Per Day

If you do need to plan something, just schedule one thing. Any more than that, and you’ll start to stress out. You’re not savouring and enjoying your journey that way. You’re just ticking things off a list. Just plan one thing, and give yourself time to explore for the rest of the day. You want to be able to improvise and change your plans along the way. Fancy trying out that restaurant or checking out the art museum you just went past? Easy.

» Hit the road

There’s nothing quite as spontaneous as a road trip! I’ve loved travelling by car for as long as I can remember. It’s an amazing way to immerse yourself into a new country. Seeing the world from the road is a special experience. Every new town is a new adventure; it’s the very essence of spontaneity. It’s often very cheap too. You can pick up a used RV, and sleep on the side of the road. Or, simply book a few cheap hostels and motels along the way.

» Live like a local

You don’t have to squeeze in the tourist sites. In fact, you might have more fun if you don’t! Instead of following the guide book to the letter, forget about it, and live like a local. You’ll have much more fun finding the hidden spots, and staying under the radar. Find the bars, restaurants, and cafes off the beaten track. Go to the library, and indulge your passions while you’re there.

»Savour the local food

Last of all, always try some of the local food. It’s the easiest way to introduce spontaneity into your trip. Eat something you’ve never eaten before, and you’ll always remember it! Find local markets, and hidden restaurants for the best food.
