Onondaga Cave State Park Hike and Skippy’s Route 66 Cafe

While waiting for our tour of the incredible Onondaga Cave we had a couple of hours to kill, so we went on a hike up and over the river. It was beautiful because it felt like spring. All of the different colors were starting to pop and show bits of their beautiful selves.

We walked up and around this bluff until we came out over a pretty view of the river. This wasn’t an especially scenic hike, but it had it’s own beauty and the experience is always great. Weended up being on a bit of an adventure because apparently the last third of this trail was closed. However, since the tours were only every two hours we were very quickly running out of time! So, we decided to chance it and it was a good thing we did! We didn’t quite figure out why the trail was closed. There were a couple of boards missing from the edge at one point of the trail (but the trail was still there), but we made it back to the cave in just enough time.

After the hike and the cave tour we worked up a bit of an appetite. We drove into Leasburg, and in their downtown area (at around 1:30) we found that nothing was open, but just outside of the town, right off of old Route 66 was Skippy’s a little diner with “good food for good people”. It was a cute little dive with amazing food! We ordered a beer, shared an appetizer of fried, cheddar cauliflower (which was so delicious!) and we each ordered a sandwich!

I got the French dip sandwich, on homemade bread, the meat sliced in the kitchen with homemade potato chips! Everything was soooo good! We were very impressed and I highly recommend not only this state park, but stopping at Skippy’s for lunch, dinner or a snack too!

I love reading about places to explore in the U.S. I kind of always forget that it has so much to offer :/
