Top Activities For Traveling Alone

Traveling alone can be absolutely fantastic. You don’t need to worry about fitting in around anyone else’s plans. No one likes getting dragged to that monument on a mountaintop that you have zero interest in. You can just do what you want, when you want, which is wonderfully liberating. However, the downside of travelling alone is that it can sometimes feel a little lonely. Anyone can have those moments where we just fancy having a chat and connecting with others.

With that in mind here are some of the top activities to do. when travelling alone. They’ll help keep you from feeling alone. Plus, show that you can have something dynamic, social and interesting to look forward to.

Take a Language Course

Italian is a romantic language after all…

Getting yourself registered on a language course is a fantastic way to make sure you can meet new people. The best part is also learning a new skill. Language schools like Ellci, in Milan, organise Italian language courses for foreigners visiting the city that want to combine learning a new language with meeting new and interesting people from all over the globe.

Language courses generally last a few hours in the morning which means you have the rest of the day to explore the city and practice your newfound Italian language skills. Perhaps even with one or two new friends from the school. To get the most out of an Italian language course, most schools recommend a minimum of one month, so why not really treat yourself to a full month in an Italian city of your choice and spend four blissful weeks exploring your chosen destination, immersing yourself in the local language, culture and cuisine and perhaps even meet a few new friends along the way.

Volunteer Somewhere for a Cause You Really Care About

Why not volunteer at Safari Park Zoo?

I have found this is especially great if you’re traveling long-term. Volunteering is not only a great place to meet people who share interests, but it’s also a great way to do something rewarding. While traveling is absolutely amazing, there is a point that it starts to feel unproductive and you start to crave a bit of structure. Volunteering is sort-of like having a job, but it’s better. It feels great to be making a difference in people’s (or animal’s) lives. Just make sure where you’re volunteering is legit and ethical.

A Yoga Retreat

Utopia in Luang Prabang Offers Riverfront Yoga Classes

If you’re travelling alone somewhere and feel the need to really unwind, relax and connect with yourself, why not book yourself in for a day or two at a yoga retreat. Yoga centres and retreats can be found in practically any destinations these days. Especially since the art of yoga is rapidly becoming one of the most popular way to improve mind, body and soul. Plus you can do them all around the world!

Therefore checking yourself into a yoga retreat, for part of your holiday, could be a wonderful way to really disconnect from the demands of daily life and spend some time just investing in yourself and quieting your mind. Although yoga retreats are generally really quiet and contemplative places, they can also lead you to new friendships and allow you to meet interesting and unique people from all corners of the globe.

Take a Street Food Tour or Cooking Class

Sometimes you can get the best of both – on my Vietnamese Street Food Tour, I got to help make these pancakes

Again, this is another great way to meet up with people who have a similar interest. It’s also a great way to dive into a unique (and hopefully delicious!) aspect of culture. Plus, if you take a class it means that you get to go home with a brand new skill to show off back home. How cool is that?

Get Involved in a Local Crafts Workshop

A beautiful pottery demonstration in Greece

Why not consider getting involved in a workshop that teaches you how to make something important to the local culture. Whether that is making Greek pottery plates and jugs, or pretty Spanish mosaic decorations. Or, perhaps even getting involved in an outdoors painting class, painting an idyllic Tuscan countryside view. Whatever you fancy, jump online and see if there are any groups available for you to learn that craft.

Are you convinced that you could try traveling alone? If you are a solo traveler, what are your favorite solo activities?

It was an absolute blast! It wasn’t perfect at the zoo, it has a long way to go, but I was proud to be part of bettering the animals’ lives.

Traveling alone is a great opportunity to break free and do your thing. But sometimes you do need some regular and formal activity to channel your thoughts, these suggestions are all great. My personal preference would be a language course and volunteering for a cause. This way i would get closer to the culture and people of the place and also add value.

Absolutely! I agree with you that language courses and volunteering sound like some of the most fun activities. Although, I do love a good yoga retreat!

Ooh! That’s a great tip! I’ve also met people in my hostel common areas. You can meet people anywhere if you’re outgoing enough.

Great tips, thank you for sharing! I took a cooking class once when I was in Thailand so I could meet some more travellers, turns out I was the only one that signed up. It was still pretty cool though 🙂

When plans turn on you… Haha! At least you still had a great time. I’ve never had that happen, but I guarantee you that you got the best education in the class! 😉
