Wanderlust Wednesday- Made in Iceland

I mentioned in my post on Paul Theroux’s book The Tao of Travel, that I was particularly inspired by the section on walking.  I think there is something to this idea of walking places.

This summer my friend, Lilly, and I started taking these walks on a regular basis and we really fell in love with it.  It was almost like therapy to us.  We would just talk the whole time about things going on in our lives, our dreams and what was going on around us.  In The Tao of Travel there are many quotes that truly described the way I feel while walking and I wanted to share a few of those:

“Walking is a spiritual act; walking induces one’s own spiritual meditation.”

-Paul Theroux-

“For every walk is a sort of crusade.”

-Henry David Thoreau-

“Future seemed farther off than ever, and recurring illness nagged, but what a pilgrimage to far places calls for: willingness to let the world go, its momentariness, to die on the road, human destiny, which lifted spirit a little, finding foot again here and there.”

-Matsuo Basho-

“Give me the ocean, the desert or the wilderness!  In the desert, pure air and solitude compensate for want of moisture and fertility.  The traveler Burton says of it, ‘Your morale improves; you become frank and cordial, hospitable and singleminded… In the desert, spirituous liquors excited only disgust.  There is a keen enjoyment in a mere animal existence.'”

-Henry David Thoreau-

“Between clinging and letting go, I feel a terrific struggle.  This is a fine chance to let go, to ‘win my life by losing it,’ which means not recklessness but acceptance, not passivity, but non-attachment.”

-Peter Matthiessen-

These quotes made me want to do something awesome like hike an entire state (future plans in the making, possibly), but then I found this video made by Klara Harden in, you guessed it, Iceland!  She hiked through iceland solo and made this absolutely inspiring and beautiful video about it.  I hope you all enjoy!

Very cool! I have to say, I am currently walking the north of Spain along the Camino de Santiago -a great way to see the country, experience the culture and reflect on life! At the moment, it is very crowded – but I am loving it none the less!

Walking is equally enjoyable in cities and the wilderness. Keep on!
