Wanderlust Wednesday- Why Travel? 2nd Edition

About two years ago I wrote a post called “Why Travel” that was all about how some of my close friends, family and I answer the question, Why Travel?  I really enjoyed writing that, and I asked some of my friends to tell me why they travel, what they love about travel, or something specific, and I want to do these every so often because I have loved hearing from my fellow travel-loving friends!

“I’d drive to Italy if I could.”
-Jan McIntyre
Jan wrote a guest post for me last summer called Memoirs of a Road Warrior!  You should totally check it out!

“I have to agree with one of my lifelong influences on this one.  Mark Twain once said something to the effect of nothing will combat prejudice and intolerance as effectively as traveling far and wide.”
-George
George and I went to college together, and between classes we would swap travel tales!

“Traveling is like breathing.  I need it to survive.  I am nit ashamed of my wanderlust. I embrace it, and as soon as I return from one trip, be it across the world, or just to the next city, I begin preparing for my next adventure.  I believe that travel has a direct connection to peace.  When we travel and experience something new, when we are willing to get out of our comfort zones and meet new people, see new places, taste new foods, cross borders, and explore new cultures, we open ourselves up.  We add new memories and make room in our lives, our hearts and our minds for new thoughts, new opinions, and new friendships.  To travel is to educate, and to educate is to promote acceptance, respect, and peace.
Traveling is part of who I am.  I cannot deny it.  But, to travel, does not mean I have to jump on a plane to some far off place- though I most definitely do that anytime I can!  But, I can also travel on a journey when I go around the corner to the grocery store, or drive across town to a cafe.  It’s all about my perspective and my willingness to see every day, every moment, every person as part of the journey.
Yes, I want to travel all over the whole entire world.  And I want to really badly.  My bucket list is endless and I plan on seeing as much of this amazing world as I can throughout my life.  But, I must also learn and remember that my neighborhood holds just as many interesting people and experiences as well.  Everywhere I go, I travel. And I write. And I take photos. It’s who I am.  A gypsy, pilgrim writer, living from her soul.”

Liz is one of my favorite bloggers, and now (through blogging and travel) one of my closest friends!  She wrote a guest post for me last summer called Not All Who Wander Are Lost

“Travel is about culture, exploring the boundaries- and pushing your own boundaries.  I travel to enlighten my senses: Taste the food and drink.  See the beauty. Smell the richness.”
-Jeremy
Jeremy was my high school history teacher, and now a great friend!  I went to Italy on a tour with him in 2007, which was a trip that shaped my life!  He has been taking teenagers to Europe, Australia and China for years and continues to do so!

“Traveling has been my biggest educator.  Whether or not I do educational activities, I still get a better understanding of people and of the world each time I take a trip, whether big or small.  It also has been a kind of friend.  The memories made touch a special place inside that really only special relationships can reach and teach me things about myself or confirm what your that to be true of you.  Finally, I love the special connection/bond it brings between people who have traveled together and/or met in their travels.  It’s the sweetest thing.”
-Keely
Keely is a friend I made on the same trip to Italy I mentioned above!  We still talk every now and then and we talk travel together pretty much every time we talk!

I hope you thought that these were as inspiring as I do!  I love hearing why other people travel and what about travel they love!  I can’t wait to continue to hear more!

I just had my first taste of travelling solo and I think I’m going to be doing it as often as I can, locally and abroad. It opened my eyes to so many things, broadened my horizons, and made me realize so many things about myself. It was an empowering and life-changing experience! I like travelling with friends but travelling alone sometimes is now a must for me. I think travel is like that, there’s always a journey waiting for you whether on your own or with others.

It’s a really liberating to travel solo isn’t it? I agree that it’s incredible empowering. It’s convenient being able to do the things you really want to do and see when you want to do them, but even more than that it’s great to get to know yourself! Thanks for reading and for the great comment! Cheers to more adventures!
