Angkor Wat is one of those bucket list destinations. Photos of Angkor Wat are always popping up on Instagram and across social media. Did you know, though, that there is so much more to this amazing archaeological complex than just the temple Angkor Wat? This complex has 20+ sites! It’s an amazing place to explore! However, I realized while constructing the post, that we had so many amazing photos of Angkor Wat that I wanted to share. So, as a bit of a teaser for the upcoming guide, here are 101 photos of Angkor Wat to inspire you to visit this gorgeous Cambodian UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sunrise at Angkor Wat can be one of the most stunning experiences you’ll ever seen. If you have a multi-day pass, go until you see a good one. It’s worth it. It’ll undoubtably end up being one of your favorite photos of Angkor Wat.
It seems that every single surface is covered with stunning examples of bas relief depicting Hindu vedas and Buddhist tales.
Dressing modestly is a must in sacred spaces. In some outlying buildings and corridors you can have your shoulders or knees exposed, but in marked areas be sure to be respectful and follow those rules.
Monks also make pilgrimages to see this stunning site. Treat them with respect. Ask to take photos, try not to stand taller than them and don’t touch them. That said, interact when you can. You could learn something or end up posing for a silly photo for them and then with them.
Bayon is covered with about 200 faces of Avalokiteśvara; each with a subtle smile.
Angkor Wat is even more than architecture and something that pairs well with the spirituality for me personally is the nature surrounding it.
Cute but cheeky little monkeys are all over the Angkor Archaeological Complex. They look really sweet and innocent, but they can been mischievous. This little cutie broke into this man’s motorbike and was eating whatever that seat storage was containing.
You can find monks offering blessings in many of the different temples. Some alcoves have Buddha statues/figures in them with alters where you can leave incense or other offerings.
I hope that these photos of Angkor Wat have given you that tingly wanderlust feeling. It’s a site in Cambodia that exceeded my expectations, especially upon really digging in and seeing more of the complex.
