There are many types of exploration that you can, and should undertake at least once. If you’re a real traveler there are many forms of travel that you can choose from, and should try out at least once. Even if you think that these types of exploration are not suited to you, or that you’re not suited to them, you should still try them because, you never know. It could surprise you! Here are examples to start with.
An Epic Road Trip
I’m a self-proclaimed road-trip-queen! There’s nothing better than packing up a box of junk food and taking off. The best way to road trip, in my opinion, is to pick a few destinations and then make any and every roadside stop that you can! The spontaneity of a road trip is the best thing about it. It’s just you (a companion, if you have a perfect road trip partner) and the open road!
Camping
There is nothing quite like camping out in the forest. If you haven’t done it yet, it’s something that you probably don’t quite understand. There’s something about falling asleep and seeing the fireflies flicker outside the tent. Then you wake up to birds chirping and fresh air. It’s just so amazing to get back to nature.
Backpacking
For many people, the idea of going backpacking can be really daunting. Especially if you’re heading out for an extended period of time. Can you really survive while traveling around in a location you don’t know with nothing more than a backpack? Well, the truth is you can. Once you get everything organized, you’re sure to have fun on the journey too. It’s something you have to experience, even if you don’t want to go back and do it again a second time.
A Cruise
Some people assume that cruises are just for retirees, but there are so many more opportunities than that. The main benefit of heading out on a cruise is that you can stop off at various places along the way. Of course, there are all kinds of cruises, so you should browse the options and consider them all. Some people opt for luxury tv cruises, others choose smaller arrangements. That’s entirely up to you. This is a method I haven’t tried out yet, but I’m not closed off to the idea. I really want to do an Antarctica cruise!
Island Hopping
Island hopping can be a lot of fun if you’ve never done it before. You just need to head to a part of the world where there are lots of small islands in close proximity that you can move between. People often do this in Thailand, Greece or the Philippines. There are many other options out there too. Just make sure that you do your research and planning in advance. The only thing you need to know is how you’re going to get between the islands. Many of these destinations offer day cruises!
An Epic Trek
A few years ago, I did the Inca Trail and it was incredible! There’s something empowering about an epic trek and you get a really great sense of accomplishment. It’s a different way to travel. With a trek like the Inca Trail you’re able to see multiple sites and views at a slower pace. I was a hiker before this trip, but now I’m even more into longer trails filled with adventure!
A Trip with Your Parents As An Adult
One of the biggest joys in traveling that I’ve found is traveling with my parents. I’ve been fortunate enough to take trips with both of my parents together and take individual mother/daughter and father/daughter trips. It’s so much fun watching your parents have new experiences and sharing these moments are something I wouldn’t trade for anything.
As you can see, there are all kinds of exploration for you to undertake, so don’t stick to the types of exploration that you’re used to. There’s a whole world out there for you to see – go explore it!

August 12, 2017 at 10:35 pmNice list. I haven’t done a trek so apart from that I couldn’t agree more. Recently did a trip with my folks and it was so rewarding for me to get to spoilt them like they spoilt me growing up!

August 13, 2017 at 2:57 pmIt is so much fun to spoil them. I love taking them places that they would never think to visit themselves… It’s so fulfilling!

August 13, 2017 at 6:02 amI would add try an extended train trip in a train with proper sleeper cars, (Europe has excellent opportunities, the ones in eastern Europe are quite affordable, or go across the Americas through Canada) oh and try a multi-day canoe, kayaking or rafting trip. Its amazing some of the things you’ll see.

August 13, 2017 at 2:58 pmOoh! That’s a good one! I want to take a trip like that through India! I’ve never thought of doing multi-day on a canoe or kayak. I’m also not very experienced in that, so it’s something to start practicing!

August 13, 2017 at 5:05 pmJust like backpacking it’s good to start off with a single day outing, then try overnight. Unlike backpacking though with a little practice you can haul everything including the kitchen sink which makes multi day paddling trips very comfortable 🙂

August 13, 2017 at 7:07 amNice list! I would love to do a mix of all.

August 13, 2017 at 2:59 pmMe too! Basically, I just want to do it all non-stop!

August 13, 2017 at 1:49 pmI am more of a mountain person. But I’ll also add a a long train journey to this list, especially if you do live in a vast country.

August 13, 2017 at 3:01 pmI’m more of a mountain person too. All the way. Someone else said train journey! I definitely need to give that a go! I want to do it in India.

August 14, 2017 at 10:06 pmLove this post! I’m a huge fan of road trips and recently started taking one trip a year with my mom. This year we are going on a cruise, my first, praying I don’t get claustrophobic stuck on a ship!

August 17, 2017 at 9:26 pmIsn’t it so fun to travel with your mom? I got to take two trips with my mom this year and feel lucky to have gotten a bonus one! Good luck! I’m sure if you feel that way, you can be cured by going up to the deck.

August 15, 2017 at 5:44 amI’ve done camping and island hopping. And you’re right, island hopping isn’t so hard to accomplish here in the Philippines 🙂 Epic trek has long been on my list! I heard the inca trail is quite tiring, I’m hoping I can do at least the Everest basecamp trek in Nepal. The Antartica cruise is also on my list but right now feels too expensive lol.
Paige Wunder
August 17, 2017 at 9:27 pmIt is tiring, but I’m 100% sure the Everest Basecamp will be much more difficult! Let me know how that goes, I’m wanting to do Annapurna Base Camp early next year and it’s 9 mountains smaller than Everest! It is quite expensive!

August 15, 2017 at 6:45 amTruly a lovely read for those looking to start out traveling. Road trips are sheer love and I am up for one anytime given the diversity and oneness with nature! 🙂 You have listed some beautiful ways to unwind and truly enjoy travel. Trekking is meditative <3

August 17, 2017 at 9:30 pmI’m always up for a road trip as well! I don’t always attach it to oneness with nature, but I suppose that’s what takes me to those places. Trekking and camping is where I feel the oneness with nature.

August 15, 2017 at 7:00 amI love this list! I’ve done five of the seven: Road Tripping in Australia and Spain, Camping in Australia, a South Pacific Cruise (although I wasn’t a huge fan), Island Hopping in Greece and the Trip with Parents (I took my mum around Italy and Spain). I agree that sharing new moments with parents whilst travelling is great. I also travelled with my brother and loved it too (when we weren’t bickering, of course!). Trekking the Inca Trail is my number one bucket list item, so it’s good to see this on your list. I love your photo on the Inca Trail – it makes me want to go so bad!

August 17, 2017 at 9:32 pmI feel like I won’t be a massive fan of cruises either. I find that most people who have traveled a lot don’t love them. I want to try one sometime though. That’s a well-deserved spot for the Inca Trail. You won’t be disappointed! It was an absolutely amazing trip and I’m so glad that I did it!

August 15, 2017 at 10:11 amI had never thought to categorize these ways of traveling, but you’re right that they are each unique in their own ways! I’m lucky to have tried them all out, and there is something good to be said for each one. I think that backpacking especially helps you learn to trust yourself (and your partner if you’re traveling with one), and the world around you. With just you and your backpack it’s incredible how many unexpected experiences you’ll have along the way. Another type of travel I’d suggest is long term travel or living abroad as an expat. It’s quite a different experience to get to know a country better over an extended stay.
Paige Wunder
August 17, 2017 at 9:38 pmI would absolutely agree with that analysis about backpacking. It brings about an awareness and sense of trust that nothing else can. That’s a great suggestion of one to add. I’ve done long-term travel but never consistently in one place. I’ve been in a region for an extended period of time, but a month in a country is the longest I’ve stayed. That’s on the list for sure.

August 15, 2017 at 12:57 pmThe only ones I haven’t really tried are true backpacking trips or an epic trek. And to be honest, I haven’t done much camping as an adult. But I so love a road trip! I’ve also done some island hopping, but I’d really like to give it a go for longer than just two weeks.
Paige Wunder
August 17, 2017 at 9:40 pmRoad trips are one of the best forms of travel out there. Road trips and backpacking are my two favorites just because with the both of them the possibilities are just truly endless.

August 16, 2017 at 1:17 pmI’ve dove into many of these, but on a much smaller scale:) I haven’t experienced the backpacking or traveling with my parents as an adult, which are great suggestions to consider. But what I really want to do someday is an epic road trip!! I would love to buy an RV and just travel around the states for a year.

August 17, 2017 at 9:43 pmTraveling with my parents as an adult is one of the best things I’ve ever done. I hope you get to try it out. I’m jealous of your sisterly travels, as I don’t have a sister. I would love to do that with an RV as well. The longest road trips I’ve done have been three or four weeks and even those have just filled me with wanderlust in a different way from anything else!

August 16, 2017 at 8:49 pmAll of them are lovely experiences. Of course the best is a trip with your parents as an adult. This is something which you will never forget and cherish as a lovely memory all your life. Cruise is another thing that we would love to do as traveling by sea is how the early explorer traveled the world.

August 17, 2017 at 9:44 pmI like that comparison of the early explorers. I never thought of it that way. Thanks for the new perspective!

August 21, 2017 at 2:49 amAwesome list, I’ve done most of these but I’m kind of on the fence with cruises too. But there are so many types of cruise, different types of destinations, and people go on them for very different reasons. I think my dream is a Norwegian fjord cruise. 🙂

August 22, 2017 at 5:49 pmI love love this post because I always try to live by the moto… life is for LIVING!!! Why not step outside our comfort zone and explore in new and exciting ways. This reminds me … I need another camping trip soon 🙂

February 11, 2018 at 10:13 amThis post was a great reminder that there are so many different ways to travel. It has been many years since I went camping but I must admit to being tempted by glamping. We have travelled with our adult children and it was very interesting to see the sights through a very different lens. They have thought our travelling lifestyle was easy until they saw the time that goes into planning and the very busy days we have.
