A Semi-Spontaneous 30-Hour Girls Trip to Memphis to See Some Trolls and More

I fell in love with Thomas Dambo trolls last summer and it’s since become a thing that I kinda obsess over finding near wherever I am. Last summer, my dad and I saw my first Thomas Dambo Trolls with on our father/daughter trip to Kentucky. And when we sent pics to home to our family, my mom said that she had heard of this guy and wanted to see some of his trolls! Since seeing my first three, I’ve become a woman on the search for trolls!

So, when I saw that the Memphis Botanic Garden was going to have a temporary exhibit of Dambo Trolls called Trolls: Save the Humans, I immediately called my mom and asked if she wanted to take a one-night trip to spend 2 hours in the Memphis Botanic Garden to see six massive troll statues. A little surprisingly, she was totally up for it!

Trolls: Save The Humans in Memphis Botanic Garden

Thomas Dambo‘s works of art are all made from recycled, reclaimed materials and are teaching mechanisms for sustainability as well. They’re also almost always “hiding” in a space that is stunningly natural: parks, arboretums, gardens, and more. I also love that each troll has a name, and an aspect of lore or a backstory that Thomas Dambo has created as well. It’s such a fun concept.

Trolls: Save the Humans is a traveling exhibit that has been to different gardens, instead of staying stationary in one location. This exhibit is a collection of 6 different trolls, there’s an interactive element that has you translating “Trollish” to “English“, and the lore is explaining all these sweet and simple ways to connect with and protect nature.

These trolls will be at the Memphis Botanic Garden until May 21st, but its next stop will be at the Fioli Garden in Woodside, California on June 7th!

In addition to the trolls, the garden itself is absolutely amazing. Their children’s section was so whimsical and magical. I want to take a trip to Memphis again specifically to take our kids here because they would love it.

I also really loved their hot house of tropical plants. That’s always a favorite garden space of mine because the foliage of tropical plants is always so lush, so colorful and so beautiful!

Girl Time in Memphis

While in Memphis, we did other girl-trip things like eat Japanese food, walk to a boba shop and get Insomnia Cookies to take back to our hotel room to veg out and hang out together for the night. We love quality, one-on-one girl time because we get so much less of it now that I have kids.

The next morning we got up and had some delicious brekkie from Brother Juniper’s. We both got the biscuits and grave with sausage added and I got some home fries. Every single bite was delicious.

Our last stop in town was to French Truck Coffee. I’d never had it before it was right on the way out of town. It’s a small, southern chain with 12 locations, including Memphis. It was a spectacular latte and I loved the decor inside the coffee shop.

Of Course, We Found a Historical Site Along the Way

My mom and I love old mills. When we were on our way down to Memphis, we passed an old mill in Arkansas with the wheel still in tact and almost u-turned to check it out, but we decided that it would be better as a stop on the way home instead. So, on our way home, we stopped at Morgan’s Mill! This beautiful was built in the 1855 and this was actually a Civil War Battle site. It was definitely nice to break up the drive and made for a quick stop. We spent about 10 minutes there, and it definitely looked a little rough and the water was brown whenever we were there due to insane floods that happened earlier that week.

I love that my mom and I still prioritize time together even though I’m 35 and she’s 60. We still have several similar interests and truly enjoy spending time together. I’m so glad that we got to do this and it was so cool to get to see six new Dambo Trolls!
