Acadia National Park- Camping and The Atlantic Ocean

Acadia National Park was one of my must-see destinations on our road trip! My dad went last fall, and brought home some really beautiful photos and I knew I had to go! When we got there we stopped in at the Visitor’s Center. I was a little disappointed because my dad had done the Precipice Hike in October and I wanted to do that hike so badly, but unfortunately it was closed for peregrine falcon nesting. I was a little heart-broken, but that’s what I get for not really researching the the park. We decided to drive through part of the loop and stop at the Seal Harbor to walk on the ocean before going to setup our campsite.

We stayed at the Blackwoods Campgound in Acadia. It was a really nice campsite with running water and bathrooms. It was really quiet and each campsite had its own picnic table it was really nice! Also, the campsites here are incredibly affordable! That’s cheaper than some KOAs I’ve been to- only $20 a night!

After setting up camp the first night we did a hike (which there will be a post on in the next day or two) and then we went into Bar Harbor for dinner. The next day we saw the ocean a few separate times. The first time was an amazing view of Sand Beach from the Beehive hike.

Later that afternoon we went to the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and Bass Harbor. I have seen really cool pictures of this lighthouse from the rocks below and Zach and I somehow missed the hike down to that so we weren’t all that impressed by the lighthouse because it’s really small, and really not all that beautiful. There is a trail to go down to the rocks, but we didn’t walk down there. (Honestly, we completely missed it… Apparently, I’m not always very observant.)

One the way back to our campsite we drove through Southwest Harbor, and it seemed especially beautiful. I don’t know if it’s because the blue sky spotted with clouds was mirrored by the blue ocean with white boats and buildings, but it was truly stunning!

Our last night we had dinner and ice cream in Bar Harbor and got back to Acadia around sunset. We went to the Thunder Hole, but the tide wasn’t high enough to really get the loud boom from the cove. However, the waves were still beautiful and we enjoyed the sunset there that night.

Thanks, Liz! I loved it up here! You two would love it up there! The hikes and sites are spectacular! Go in the fall because some of the trails were closed for the summer.

There is an area of Acadia National Park that is located on another Peninsula in a town called Winter Harbor-this area has a new campgound overlookng Henry’s Cove in Winter Harbor and a new wooded campground opening this summer (2015) miles of trails for hiking, roads & carriage roads for biking and a nice 12 mile loop that offers views to die for. People can access it by ferry from Bar Harbor or drive approx. 1:15 minutes. This s a very quiet town with interesting shops, restaurants, galleries and plenty of places for picnics. I am an artist who lives in town and welcome folks to stop by my studio for a visit when you are there,

Wow! That sounds so amazing! I already had a couple of hikes I wanted to do there, so I’m so excited to hear about this new section! What type of art do you do? If I make it up there in the next couple of years, I’d love to see your stuff! Thanks for the amazing info!
