Anyone who has ever traveled knows what a pain packing can be. Any seasoned traveler knows just how much a bag can make or break that experience. For backpackers and long-term travelers, finding something that can do it all and is carry-on-sized seems like the ultimate dream. Well, guys, I think I found the bag for backpackers who are also obsessed with ease and organization: the Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack.
The Specs of the Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack
Before I get into all the reasons that I love the Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack, I figured I’d start with the facts of the backpack. Tortuga sent me the 45L Outbreaker Backpack, so these are the basic specs for that specific pack, but for it and the 35L, the things will all be the same except the size.
Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack Measurements – This pack only weighs 5.1 pounds and measures 22″x14″x9″.
Sizing for Wearers – The straps on these packs are easily adjustable. The 45L bag will fit anyone with a a torso ranging from 16 to 20 inches. I’m 5’3″ and it adjusted to fit me well.
The Outbreaker Loads Like a Suitcase – The pack unzips to open up like a suitcase. Meaning, you don’t have to topload and unpack/repack every single time you need something from your suitcase.
There Are Organizational Pockets Galore – There are pockets and sleeves for literally anything you need. It makes it easy not only to store things, but find things.
The Outbreaker Backpack is Waterproof – Anyone who has ever had a rainy travel day knows that this is a dream.
The Zippers Are Lockable – Unlike many backpacks, it’s very easy to lock up your bag, keeping your items safe and sound.
What I Love About my Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack
You can absolutely tell that the Outbreaker Backpack was designed by travelers because there are so many things about this bag that made me fall head-over-heels for it. In addition to the simple facts of the bag I listed above, I fell so very in love with so many things about this backpack. The photos below only show off part of what I love. It’s that awesome!
Every Single Compartment is Thought Out – Travelers are all about needing storage for their things. Since this was specifically designed to be a carry on, it’s amazing how there is legitimately a place for everything. Laptop sleeve? Yep. Tablet sleeve? Of course! Water bottle holder? Why not two?! There are slots for your credit cards, passport and pens! It’s just incredible! Also, this means that you truly do only need the one bag for travel.
The Large Compartments Open in Different Directions – This may sound like a silly thing, but I love that the larger compartments open in different directions because it just kept me more organized and I think it allows me to know for sure which compartment I’m opening.
Built-In Packing Cubes – Yes, you read that right. The main suitcase-style clothing compartment has four packing cubes built into the sides. Those of you who’ve never used packing cubes have no idea just how much of a game changer this is! It’s so easy to store your undies + socks right there in the side of your bag.
The Front Fold-Down Flap – This is the slot that holds your cards, passport, pens, etc. I love that it’s here because it’s super accessible during travel days.
The Fanny-Pack Style Pouches – On the waist belt, there are two pouches, one on each side. Each one easily holds a handful of things. I love to keep my phone, a face mask and a teether toy for Charleigh in one and a little bit of cash in the other.
It’s Spacious Enough to Pack Charleigh’s Things and Mine – Now that I have this beautiful roll of ‘Mama’, I pack for her as well as me. What’s amazing about this bag is while she’s an infant, I’ve been able to easily pack enough clothes for her and for me for a weekend to 7-day trip. It’s amazing! Now, as she gets older, this probably won’t be the case, but that just goes to show you that it’s very spacious!
The Water Bottle Holders – This seems like something super small and I know I briefly mentioned it above, but this is a big deal. I have purchased so many carry-ons that don’t have this and it makes it really hard if this what you’re carrying through the airport, around town or for your work/travel bag, if you’re a digital nomad. They even fit our reusable Nalgene bottles, which are pretty wide!
Who is This Backpack Perfect For?
This bag is absolutely meant for travelers who are looking for an all-in-one bag. If you’re a luxury traveler (needing room for more dressy clothes), a habitual over-packer or if you’re planning to travel long-term in various environments, this might not be for you. Also, if you’re incapable of carrying this on your back through an airport, I wouldn’t recommend this.
However, if you’re a traveler who is very on-the-go, wants to travel with ease and you’re capable of carrying your pack on your back, the Outbreaker Backpack is certainly for you! Although this is clearly geared for carry-on use because of its size, it’s certainly perfect for the road tripper or train traveler as well! We’ve taken it on a few road trips now, and I love that it fits with ease in the seat of the car, especially since we’re a lot more limited on space now that we have a baby in tow.
If you’re a digital nomad of any kind, looking for the ultimate pack to carry your clothes as well as work equipment this is the perfect option. I love that I can pack all of my blogging tools for travel, as well as my clothes for the trip. This pack has cut out my need for my extra backpack that holds my computer and such while traveling.
Clearly, I’ve become a massive fan of the Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack, and although they gifted me this pack, this post is my genuine opinion about it. I’ve enjoyed my trips with it so far and look forward to continuing to travel with it for years to come!
