D Hostel in Kanchanaburi, Thailand: Let’s Just Call it Heaven

When I found D Hostel in Kanchanaburi on Booking.com, I had no idea really what I was in for. I expected to like it, but what I didn’t expect was to totally fall in love with it. Kanchanaburi is a place that I spent over two weeks 2.5 years ago. I was volunteering at a zoo and celebrated Song Kran here, but honestly I neglected to explore the marvels of this region. Realizing my mistake and wanting to meet up with a dear Thai friend, Matt and I quickly added a brief stay in Kanchanaburi to our list of musts for Thailand. What we didn’t realize is it would quickly become one of our favorite destinations, and shockingly a relatively new hostel has a lot to do with that.

What Makes D Hostel Heaven?

Can’t you see how D Hostel is this Mountain-lover’s version of heaven

As soon as we stepped through the door we loved this place. We were welcomed warmly by the amazing staff and fell in love with the perfect blend of amazing design + natural beauty here. The longer we were there the more we wanted to stay – so we did. We started out with just a few nights booked and ended up doubling our stay!

The Rooms at D Hostel

Left: This is the 2-room dorm – I love the perfect charging table with the lamp // Right: the view from this room.

There are dorm-style rooms available: both mixed rooms and female-only rooms. We took a peek at them while we were there and I was impressed! They’re clean and have plenty of space in them. There are four bed and two bed dorms that are priced accordingly.

This is the room with the best view in my opinion. Left: Clean design // Right: The amazing view!

Then there are the single rooms. Couples, don’t be put off by this, they sleep 1-2 and Matt and I had plenty of room. These rooms also happen to have the best views. We stayed in both of the single rooms while we were there, and loved them both.

The Other Single Room which is still great!

However, if it’s available the one on the left side of the hall (if you’re looking toward the river) was our favorite as it had the least-obstructed view of the mountains and river. The beds were unbelievably comfortable and we had a beanbag to chill on while enjoying our view.

Different views of the women’s bathroom. My favorite thing was the wire baskets on the wall outside the showers (left photo) that are super functional.

All rooms have a shared bathroom. There are two, one for men, one for women and both were unbelievably clean as well as well-equipped and functional. Plus, it has an awesome concrete look to it!

All of the Rooms at D Hostel Include:

All the rooms in the hostel have some sort of mountain view. The best views, however, are from the unbelievable common areas here at D Hostel.

Upstairs there’s a small lounge area by the window that overlooks the dock/river and mountains.

Left: Matt enjoying the hammock  // Right: The breakfast is DIY because you prepare it yourself in their kitchen.

Downstairs, there’s a tv room, plus more seating near the lobby. My favorite part, though was the outdoor space. There’s a large deck with a huge table to enjoy your DIY Complimentary Breakfast with a walkway to a dock area.

Understandably go-to, huh?

This was my go-to place. I enjoyed a lot of hammock time out there. Plus, there are bean bags and small tables. We had my Thai friend, Salapong, over and he said, ‘I wondered, why D Hostel? Then I came out here and saw ah, it’s heaven.‘ (See, we’re not the only ones who think it’s heaven – even the locals do!)

The Design

Left: The view from bed, cozy, right? // Right: View from the hall common area

D Hostel’s design is so cool. We sat down with the owner at breakfast one day and it was truly emphasized that the modern, clean look of his hostel was a point of pride. He told us all about his travels (the photos from which adorn the walls) and how he truly created a hostel made for travelers by a traveler. The rooms are just so aesthetically pleasing. They’re very simple, but in the best way. The light fixtures are industrial, the photos on the walls are perfect… it just feels cool.

The Staff + Owner

We had such amazing interactions with everyone we met who worked here. They were always quick to answer questions we had, setup tuktuks for us at a truly reasonable price and offer loads of advice. Even more than their helpfulness, they were truly friendly. We had several normal conversations about life, travels and more with the owner and staff.

The Location

When I first arrived, D Hostel seemed a bit off the beaten path, but honestly it’s just far enough off the path to have the perfect amount of tranquility. Getting into town is a very short bike, motorbike or tuktuk ride away. We rented bikes directly from D Hostel and it was insanely affordable and easy. I loved that we could have the town life and then bike 10-15 minutes back to our slice of heaven at D Hostel. Plus, it’s close enough that if you don’t want to get out at all a few restaurants deliver – we know from experience. Also, there’s a small mini mart 2 minutes away that you can get snacks and drinks from.

A Little About Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi is most famous for the hellfire pass and the infamous Bridge Over River Kwai. However, there is so much more to see and do in this city and in the Kanchanaburi Province. There are some amazing natural wonders and national parks here filled with turquoise waterfalls and mountain views. The history buff will love the WW2 history, that is worth learning more about. Plus, any culture-lovers out there will be mesmerized by the plethora of temples and massive Buddha figures that grace the countryside. You can read my quick Top 10 In Kanchanaburi here.

Now all that’s left is booking your trip to Kanchanaburi + D Hostel!

The hostel looks amazingly clean and fresh. I am impressed with the style and I could easily spend some time in that hammock. Looks like you get 5 star views as well.

Absolutely 5-star views! It’s unreal. It’s so comfortable too in addition to the amazing style. I’ve never been so blown away by a hostel.

I love a room with a view of the water, I find it so relaxing and peaceful! In these cases being a little bit out of town is definitely worth it for the peace and those views, especially if it is just a bike ride away! Save a space in the hammock for me!

It is so peaceful, isn’t it? It definitely is worth being out of town. The bike ride is so short and a great way to get a little exercise, so it was perfect!

Sooooo I haven’t been to Kanchanaburi yet, but when I go I think you’ve convinced me to stay here. All rooms have mountain rooms? What kind of perfect magical sorcery is this?! I wish James and I were back on the road and traveling as you guys are, but we AREN’T, so I’ll just continue to live vicariously through you. I would love to just chill out on a hammock for a few days in the mountains right about now! This place sounds lush and you’ve completely sold me on it =)

It’s truly wonderful. We tried to go back last week but they were all booked! We were so bummed! Isn’t that amazing that they’re all mountain views?! They put the bathrooms, kitchen, the closets and the lobby to the sides that don’t have mountain views so that every room would have them instead. Pretty good planning, I think! Luckily, you and James are pretty close to Thailand still, so there will be vacations in your future, I’m sure! Plus Vietnam is still amazing with loads to see!

That looks like a very luxurious and clean hostel. Love the hammock area. With the calm water it seems like a place I would really feel in peace with everything. The waterfall in Kanchanaburi looks so unreal. would love to go to this place and explore more of Thailand 😀

This doesn’t even look like a hostel. I think it’s awesome that each room gets a wonderful view 🙂 I’ve never stayed at a hostel as I tend to imagine that it’s not as nice as hotels, but this place has totally changed my mind about hostels.

Isn’t it beautiful?! I totally understand not wanting to stay in some of the cheaper or less beautiful hostels, but there are some really great ones out there. They cost more, but still less than hotels, but we love the really nice ones. It just takes a tiny bit of research.

Wow, this hostel looks like the absolute dream! I love that every room has a view of the mountain and at first, they came off as super simple, but after allowing us to see the room from all angles, the simplicity is quite charming. I love how thoughtful the hostel owners were in creating raise platforms for charging phones. As of late, really clean designs have spoken to me.

I love it too! The design definitely has that simple, minimalistic feel, but it’s super cozy at the same time. I thought that the raised platforms were genius too! He really thought of everything!

This looks so luxurious. I visited a hostel (Bunk Stay) here in Rishikesh, India and fell in love with it completely. It was so good that i didn’t move out the whole day. This looks so cool and love the views around. The place is beautiful and i love the interiors as well f this hostel. I would have opted for a mountain view room.

Haha. I’ve had a couple of those days in my favorite hostels as well! The best mountain view was worth paying more, but all of the rooms have some sort of mountain view.

Very well written and complete blog review. I love how you manage to showcase the beauty of this hostel. The room is really clean and quite big for me, and I truly love the panoramic view of the mountain and river as well. It is a perfect place to meditate early in the morning while enjoying the morning breeze from the mountain. Will surely check this If I get the chance to visit Thailand soon.

Thank you so much. It is a very clean hostel and those views make staying here a must! It is a great place to meditate, especially on the dock because you get the gentle sway of the river in addition to that mountain breeze. Thanks for reading!

Ah man, this hostel looks amazing! I’m actually heading to Thailand this Winter, but I don’t know if I’ll return to Kanchanaburi. Apart from Elephant World and the attractions around the River Kwai, I found it to be a rather uninteresting city. But that hostel tho!

That’s interesting that you weren’t a fan of it. I loved going to Erawan Falls the many big Buddhas in the area and I’m dying to go back and explore the caves! The hostel is amazing though. If you decide to check out any of the other cool things in the area D Hostel is THE PLACE to stay.

You know what? I’ve never stayed at a hostel. This hostel looks amazing. I especially like knowing if there are comfortable beds. I wouldn’t necessarily expect them to be comfy at a hostel.

Thailand is on my list of places I’d like to visit (but let’s face it, that’s a LONG list). Kanchanaburi sounds like a really interesting city, given its history. I also always love waterfalls, especially if you can swim in the teal water at the bottom. I’m the “hearts in my eyes” emoji right now after looking at that waterfall picture.

What fabulous views! And the hostel just doesn’t look like a hostel to me. I’d still hesitate because of the shared bathrooms – but I’m guessing it’s excellent value against a hotel in Kanchanaburi?

That’s pretty cool for a hostel, I love the simple clean lines and color palette – and I can see myself out on that hammock for sunrise and sunset

OMG I want to be in that hammock. We lived in Chiang Mai Thailand twice each for 6 months stints and sadly did’t make it here. So many amazing places in Thailand.

A hostel in the mountains? WHOA! Now I know why you call it heaven. Loved the minimalist design, looks so chic and comfortable and even though it is a dorm it is so spacious and not match box sized! The hammock!! That made me smile and with views like that who wouldn’t want to stay here. So neat! The best part is that it is away from the town! Perfect hangout:)

I have been to Kanchanaburi before but it was a day trip. Never even thought one could and should stay here. D Hostel looks pretty comfortable and upscale too. I guess I must check it out next time I am in Thailand.

D hostel in Kanchanaburi, Thailand looks just amazing. I am bit skeptical about staying in hostels but this one is super clean with modern design. The views from room are good and the best ones are from common areas. Hammock in lounge with views is what I am gonna love. Will bookmark this for my next visit. Thanks for sharing.

This hostel looks so nice! I only spent a few hours in Kanchanaburi, when I visited the Bridge over the river Kwai. But yes, I hope to return and will bear in mind the D Hostel. Cheers!
