The monastery at Ettal was a last minute stop for us; it’s in the Alps, but off the Romantic Road. This Benedictine Abbey was founded in 1330 and has been active on and off since. in the 1700s the monastery was suppressed due to the French Revolution, keeping the Benedictine life suppressed for almost a century.
The church that’s standing here now is not the original. The original destroyed it in 1744 and finally in 1790 the new baroque church was entirely functional, although it has been under restoration since WW2, it’s still an absolutely incredible site to see!
