This past weekend I took a couple little day trips, and one was to visit my friend Chris up in Kansas City. I’ve been up there a few times, but usually just to do one specific thing, and then turn around and come right back home. This trip was short, but it was also really relaxing and I got to do a whole lot of nothing- which was perfect right after finals.
We went shopping in the Plaza, which is a pretty popular thing to do in Kansas City. It’s a really pretty area with a lot of interesting Islamic/Spanish-looking architecture. There’s quite a variety of shops, and we went in a few of my favorites, but I ended up only getting the latest edition of AFAR Magazine- (It’s my favorite travel magazine). After exploring the plaza for most of the morning we went to eat at the Jerusalem Cafe. It’s a Middle-Eastern restaurant with delicious food, a hookah bar, and they have a lot of vegetarian options. I had the lentil soup and the chicken kebab “sandwich” and Chris had the chicken curry. His won the taste test- it was delicious!
We had planned to go to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, but we didn’t realize that they were closed on Mondays, so instead we went to the Kansas City downtown library. It’s inside the old Bank of Kansas City and it is so beautiful! There was a little historical exhibit about the history of the Atomic Bomb and how it shaped that culture. Then we went downstairs and they converted the old bank vault into a tiny movie theatre. It was one of the coolest things I’ve seen. Upstairs is the children’s section and it’s very cool. If I were a kid, I would love to go to that library and read.
After we went to the library, we spent a good chunk of time just hanging out. When dinner rolled around, though, we went to a restaurant that was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives called Smokin’ Guns. It. Was. Delicious. Kansas City is known for it’s BBQ and this did not disappoint. I had the pulled pork sandwich with fries and baked potato casserole and Chris had the burnt-ends with baked potato casserole and corn. (I think I won this taste test, though.) We got it to go so we could watch How I Met Your Mother.
It was a great little getaway and I love getting to get out of town for a day and spend time with good friends. Do you have any day trips planned for the winter season?
