When we found out that Secret Food Tours had just started a London Craft Beer tour, I knew that we just to check it out! We fell in love with Secret Food Tours in Lisbon, and we were confident that we would get a great tour in London and we were right! This London Craft Beer Tour takes you to Shoreditch which is a funky part of London that apparently sets the trends. So, it’s no wonder that craft beer is on the rise here!
QUICK INFO ABOUT SECRET FOOD TOUR’S LONDON CRAFT BEER TOUR
⋙ The London Craft Beer Tour lasts approximately 3 – 3.5 hours and costs £45. The tour is available Monday through Saturday at 2:15.
⋙ It’s great that the tour starts after lunch because you will not want to take this tour on an empty stomach. You’ll be trying about 7 beers!
⋙ Although the walking on this tour isn’t super extensive, still wear comfy shoes as you will walk some. (Plus, you might want to explore the area more after the tour.)
NOW, LET’S GET ON WITH THE BREWS
We met up with our tour guide, Dave, at the meeting place, which was easy to find and sits just outside the tube stop in Shoreditch, so it was incredibly convenient as well. The four of us (Matt, my mother + father-in-law and myself) followed Dave to a really trendy looking bar called The Craft Beer Co. which is a British chain that has a location in none other than Shoreditch. Inside, Dave told us a bit more information about craft beer in general and about the craft beer movement in London. Plus, Dave told us some really interesting personal history about Shoreditch – he was a really cool guy. While chatting and learning about craft beer, we sampled an American Pale Ale and a Chocolate Cake Stout.
After trying out the two beers, we made our way to our next stop, which was my personal, favorite. However, before we got there, Dave gave us some history dating back to the Plague in London and we also saw some cool street art – some of it was even in progress!
LONG ARM BREWERY
This was definitely my favorite stop on our London craft beer tour. In addition to having so many delicious, unique brews, they have a really amazing sustainability concept. We met up with the manager who taught us a little more about their concept and let us smell and crush some of the hops they use – which was cool for a hophead like myself.
I loved this quirky “brew chooser”. If you can’t decide which beer to have, you simply spin the wheel and let fate decide. From what I tried, you can’t go wrong with any brew. This mural shows you all about their brewing process and how they follow through with their sustainability mission. It was super interesting. The most interesting part was that their “waste” is fed to fish in a fish farm! Learning more about the materials used to brew their beer. My favorite was an oatmeal American Pale Ale. It was unique and super delicious!
Up next was more of the Shoreditch tour. We were just down the road from the Gherkin and Dave pointed out something really cool: those dragon-topped pillars. They mark the original old city of London and we loved scoping them out all around town after learning what they were.
OUR LAST STOP
The last stop on our London craft beer tour was to a local pub called The Water Poet. It looked like an amazing hangout. Their outdoor area was absolutely stunning. Then, we went in and had a pint. It was a great place to end the tour and hang out, just like Shoreditch locals!
SECRET FOOD TOURS CRAFT BEER LONDON TAKEAWAYS
I really loved the different places we stopped. Each had a different feel and Shoreditch was definitely a funky section to explore. I hadn’t heard of it before the tour, so I’m glad that Secret Food Tours introduced us to it! This tour is still in its infancy since it was just started in March, but even with it being new, it was a great tour. All four of us great enjoyed the selection of bars and brews and Dave was a wonderful guide.
