Moab: a.k.a. My Dad Hates Camping

So, when this trip was first created, it was a road trip for Hannah and me, and she and I are pretty cheap and we wanted to camp.  I was looking forward to camping in Moab, my dad, however, was not!  We got to our campground and got everything set up before taking off for the day.

If only our night went as well as pitching the tent.  We came back from hiking and got all ready for bed and began camping out.  Within the first hour my dad got stung by a yellow-jacket, killed a large spider, and complained about how uncomfortable he was without air conditioning.  He even tried sleeping in the car at one point.

The next night we ate at the Moab Grill, which was overpriced, but they made a mean burger.  We walked around town some and stopped by the Visitor’s Center.  The people that worked there were really friendly and knowledgeable.  The woman that worked there told us about some Native American Petroglyhps off of Potash Road (where she also told us the new Lone Ranger movie, with Johnny Depp, is being filmed).

When driving down the Potash Road there are these beautiful, steep, red cliff faces to your right and the Colorado River to your left.  We saw dozens of climbers making their way up these cliffs.  It was so cool!  (I would love to learn to rock climb like that).

If you drive further down the road, there are multiple sections of large petroglyphs that are clearly labeled.  My two favorites were  a hunting scene where the Native Americans are hunting this giant bear, and the second is a row of over ten Native Americans linked together like they’re holding hands.

We tried to see the dinosaur prints a little further down the street, but it was confusing, and a mini dust storm was coming through, and my dad was convinced our tent was gone.

Good news was our campsite was fine, but bad news was that we got no sleep that night.  I fell asleep very easily, but apparently this couple fell asleep with their book on CD on repeat so my dad woke me up to tell me that he couldn’t sleep!  Ha!  Needless to say we got maybe two hours of sleep, and the third night my dad packed up our tent and we stayed in a hotel.  Did I mention before that my dad hates camping?

Beautiful photography! I love the Moab area and think it would be wonderful to camp there someday. Have been there in the summer and it was HOT though.

    Happy travels!
