Quotes That Inspire Travel- Part 26

This week’s Wanderlust Wednesday is another edition of Quotes that Inspire Travel.  When I was going through my vast list of quotes I was really inspired by the quotes about what makes a traveler, how to make travel happen and just seeing/experiencing new things.  A week from today, I will be blogging from Sweden, so I’ve been especially inspired by these words this week.

“If I had learned one thing from traveling, it was that the way to get things done was to go ahead and do them.  Don’t talk about going to Borneo… Book a ticket, get a visa, pack a bag, and it just happens.”

-The Beach-

“Stripped of your ordinary surroundings, your friends your daily routines, your refrigerator full of food, your closet full of clothes- with all this taken away, you are forced into direct experience.  Such direct experience inevitably makes you aware of who it is that is having the experience.  That’s not always comfortable, but it is always invigorating.”

-Michael Chrichton-

“Cherish your solitude.  Take trains by yourself to places you have never been.  Sleep alone under the stars.  Learn how to drive a stick shift.  Go so far away that you stop being afraid of not coming back.  Say no when you don’t want to do something.  Say yes if you are strong, even if everyone  around you disagrees.  Decide whether you want to be lied or admired.  Decide if fitting in is more important than finding out what you’re doing here.”

-Eve Ensler-

“If you’re brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting, which can be anything from your house to bitter, old resentments and set out on a truth-seeking journey, either externally or internally, and if you’re willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue, and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher, and if you are prepared, most of all, to face and forgive some very difficult realities about yourself, then the truth will not be withheld from you.”

-Elizabeth Gilbert-

“No road offers more mystery than the first one you mount from the town you were born to, the first time you mount it of your own volition, on trip funded by your own coffee tin of wrinkled up dollar bills you’ve saved and scrounged for, worked the all-night switchboard for, missed the Rolling Stones for…”

-Mary Karr

“I beg young people to travel.  If you don’t have a passport, get one.  Take a summer, get a backpack and go to Delhi, go to Saigon, go to Bangkok, go to Kenya.  Have your mind blown.  Eat interesting foo.  Dig some interesting people.  Have an adventure.  Be careful.  Come back and you’re going to see your country differently, you’re going to see your president differently, no matter who it is.  Music, culture, food, water.  Your showers will become shorter.  You’re going to get a sense of what globalization looks like.  It’s not what Tom Friedman writes about; I’m sorry.  You’re going to see that global climate change is very real.  And that for some people, their day consists of walking 12 miles for four buckets of water.  And so there are lessons that you can’t get out of a book that are waiting for you at the other end of a flight.  A lot of people- Americans and Europeans- come back and go, ohhhhh.  And the lightbulb goes on.”

-Henry Rollins-

“When I was very young and the urge to be someplace was on me, I was assured by mature people that maturity would cure this itch.  When years described me as mature, the remedy prescribed was middle age.  Im middle age I was assured that greater age would calm my fever and now that I am fifty-eight perhaps senility will do the job.  Nothing has worked… In other words, I don’t improve, in further words, once a bum always a bum.  I fear the disease is incurable.”

-John Steinbeck-

“Travel is at its most rewarding when it ceases to be about your reaching a destination and becomes indistinguishable from living your life.”

-Paul Theroux-
