Salzburg, Austria

Our visit to Salzburg was cut in half because of travel conflicts, but we still enjoyed our very brief visit.  It started out in the Mirabell Palace and Gardens.  This was one of the shooting locations for the sound of music (where the kids and Maria sang and danced).  I have seen photos of these gardens in the summer, and they’re very impressive.  However, when we were there they were just starting to plant them!

We walked through this side of town towards the older part of town across the river.  Along the way, though, we passed Mozart’s residence.

Across the river was something pretty spectacular.  Salzburg was definitely a feast for the eyes.  The buildings are brightly colored, churches have those unique onion-shaped domes, mountains on one side, river on the other… I mean, even the cemeteries are stunning!

I LOVE these domes!

This cemetery was an inspiration for the scene in The Sound of Music where they hide behind the tombs.  I think that this is such a beautiful homage to loved ones. IMG_9932 IMG_9933 IMG_9936

These gardens on these ornate tombs are absolutely beautiful. IMG_9938 IMG_9939

The last thing we saw was the Salzburg Dom- the main church of Salzburg. This was the first church of this trip that made me say wow!  This church was unlike the Italian or French churches that I’ve seen, but just as unique.

Inside the deep reds, golden yellows and vivd blues were such a perfect contrast to the white.  It’s covered with ornate carvings, and is the perfect place to sit and take it all in.

Although this trip was a bit rushed, and we lost out on quite a bit of our time there, I still really, really enjoyed the things we got to see here!

I have been wanting to visit Salzburg and skip through the streets singing songs from the sound of music. I didn’t realize there is so much more to see!
