Söderköping, Sweden

The original mission when visiting Söderköping was plain and simple: eat copious amounts delicious, decadent ice cream.  Don’t worry, we did that, but then we spent time together.  It was down to my last 48 hours in Sweden.  I could feel the month abroad coming to an end.  So, Liz, Lina, Sofi (my new friend and Swedsih soul sister) and I walked and talked, cherishing the moments, through the cozy streets of this 16th century town.

Like I said, our main mission was to eat ice cream at a specific shop that everyone I met in Norrköping kept talking about (Smultronstället).  This wasn’t your typical two-scoops-of-chocolate kind of ice cream shop.  They had a massive menu with pictures of the most amazing looking combinations of flavors, fruits, chocolates… basically anything delicious you could think of and a little bit more. Lina’s amazing parents took us and shared in this ice cream moment, along with dear, sweet Sofi!

After enjoying waaaay too much ice cream, Lina’s parents went back to Norrköping leaving us to explore this cute town on the Göta Canal.  We walked through the streets lined with stunning flowers and pastel-colored homes with the coziest outdoor spaces I’ve ever seen.   IMG_7926 IMG_7929 IMG_7934 IMG_7935 IMG_7943 IMG_7951 IMG_7958 IMG_7961 IMG_7967 IMG_7970 IMG_7971 IMG_7976 IMG_7977 IMG_7981

After strolling through these streets we decided to do what three Asheville girls do best – hang out and drink some local beer.  Sofi had told us about this little place (Millingstorp) on the canal that brewed their own beer, so we had to check it out.  A man from Liverpool owns this bar and brews his pale ale with a bit of whiskey in it! It had an interesting and delicious flavor. Plus, you totally got the internal warmth of the whiskey!  We got to meet the owner when a fight to keep a bee out of Liz’s beer was lost when the bee drowned in the glass.  The owner watched her fight, and generously gave her another beer; so sweet!

Our visit ended with sad goodbyes with Sofi, but also with great memories in this cozy canal-town.

Oh, what fun!! I don’t’ associate Sweden with ice cream, guess they don’t eat much in winter! What a lovely place. What is that interesting wooden structure?

I would have never thought of there being a major ice cream shop in Sweden until I went. Ha! I’m not positive what the wooden structure is, it was right outside one of the churches, and I haven’t been able to find any information on it. Thank you so much for reading, and sorry for the late response.
