Visiting National Parks in 2026 – Fees, Permits, and More from A to Z

Fees are changing for National Parks in 2026, some parks now require timed entry, and many require permits for different trails or experiences. This can be incredibly confusing, and sometimes difficult, when planning your own national park adventure. While some changes can be frustrating because it makes spontaneity difficult, those are done to mitigate damages to the park. Other changes coming are going to potentially hurt wallets and potentially tourist economy from international travelers. But one thing remains true, the national parks are incredible and worth visiting if you can. So, this is your one-stop post to visiting national parks in 2026 when it comes to fees, timed entries, trail permits and more!

Let’s Start with National Park Fees in 2026

For the first time in the U.S. National Park fees are different for U.S. citizens and residents than they are for non-residents. While, I’m not opposed to this, in theory, because I’ve paid more in other countries as a foreigner, but I have to say, these numbers for the U.S. national parks are shocking. So, I’m going to break this down for U.S. citizens and residents vs. non residents, so you can go to the subheading appropriate to you.

2026 National Park Fees for U.S. Citizens and Residents

ANNUAL NATIONAL PARK PASS: An annual America the Beautiful Park Pass costs U.S. residents and citizens $80. This price hasn’t changed. However, one change is that one pass will now cover two motorcycles instead of just one. This pass also works for most NPS sites in addition to National Parks. So, national monuments, national battlefield, etc.

INDIVIDUAL PARK ENTRY FEES: Park fees will vary from park, just as before. But these range from $10 to $35 and typically cover about a week’s worth of entry. These do not include other permits and timed entry. If you plan on visiting more than 2 parks in a year, it typically pays for itself. Also, some parks don’t have entrance fees.
*Popular park surcharges do not apply to U.S. citizens and residents.

NPS FREE VISIT DATES: In 2026 there will be 10 fee-free days, including an entire fee-free weekend: February 16th, May 25th, June 14th, July 3rd-5th, August 25th, September 17th, October 27th, and November 11th. But, remember if the park requires timed entry or other permits, you’ll still need to acquire those.
*For the first time ever, in 2026, these free days apply only to U.S. citizens and residents.

2026 National Park Fees for Non-Residents

ANNUAL NATIONAL PARK PASS FOR NON-RESIDENTS: Annual national park passes will now be $250 for non-residents.

INDIVIDUAL PARK FEES: The 11 busiest parks now have a $100 surcharge per person for non-residents of the United States. This is steep, I know. These parks include: Acadia in Maine, Bryce Canyon in Utah, Everglades in Florida, Glacier in Montana, Grand Canyon in Arizona, Grand Teton in Wyoming, Rocky Mountain in Colorado, Sequoia & Kings Canyon in California, Yellowstone in Idaho/Montana/Wyoming, Yosemite in California, and Zion in Utah.
This part feels slightly unclear to me. I can’t tell if only the 11 surcharge parks will have an additional fee, but I would be prepared for the potential that the other 52 parks might have a slight upcharge.

FEE-FREE DAYS NO LONGER APPLY: The fee-free days only apply to U.S. residents and citizens now, so be prepared to pay for these days now.

Timed Entries and Specific Permits Required in the U.S. National Parks from A-Z

This is a list of all 63 national parks with their entrance fees, whether or not the entrance booths are cashless and if these parks require special permits like timed entry, parking passes, and even permits for really popular and specific hikes, or cave tours.
