Wanderlust Wednesday- 180 South

So, last week I was introduced to the documentary 180 South.  I am having the biggest case of wanderlust now and I want to go to Chile so badly now!

180 South is a documentary that follows the wanderer Jeff Johnson on his quest to retrace the steps of Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins on a trip to Patagonia.  You follow Jeff from Mexico to Chile on a sail boat.  There are many struggles on this journey, one causing a major delay in Rapa Nui (Easter Island).  It just adds to his journey.  He reaches Patagonia where he stays with Tompkins, and goes climbing with Chouinard and some friends.  It’s a story about acting when the travel bug bites, watching him sail, surf, hike and climb.  I have not been inspired like this in a really long time!

I want to share some of my favorite quotes from this documentary:

“There were people out there putting themselves in places they weren’t supposed to be, and I knew right then that I wanted to be there too.”

-Jeff Johnson-

“If I don’t get on that boat, I know exactly  what I’m going home to.  If I do, my future is unwritten.”

-Jeff Johnson-

“I’m drawn to open country; it’s where everything becomes clear.  Where the world makes the most sense.  When I put myself out there I always return with something new.”

-Jeff Johnson-

“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn’t think to ask.”

-Jeff Johnson quoting his friend-

“The whole purpose of climbing something like Everest is the effect; some  sort of spiritual and physical gain, but if you compromise the process you’re an ass hole when you start out and you’re an ass hole when you get back.”

-Yvan Chouinard-

“Fear of the unknown is the greatest fear of all.”

-Yvon Chouinard-

“The word adventure has just gotten overused.  For me, adventure is when everything goes wrong.  That’s when the adventure starts.”

-Yvon Chouinard-

“Yeah, the end result is absolutely useless, but every time I travel I learn something new.  Hopefully I get to be a better person.”

-Yvon Chouinard-

“When open country is gone, we will be gone with it.”

-Yvon Chouinard-

This documentary has been out for a couple of years, so I want to know what you guys thought if you’ve seen it!  If you haven’t, though, drop whatever it is that you’re doing and do this… Now.  Seriously, guys… NOW!
