Wanderlust Wednesday- Movies that Inspire Travel Part 5

This week I’m back to movies that inspire travel, but it also has a theme!  It’s ITALY MOVIES!  I’m leaving for Italia in 58 days, and I am so excited!  I’ve been watching lots of great movies to help with the excitement!  So here we go… 5 movies that will make you want to go to Italy:

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)

This movie gave me one serious case of wanderlust.  It’s about a rich-kid (Jude Law) who runs off to Italy to live, and his dad sends someone after him (Matt Damon), to bring him back home to work in the family business, but then Damon ends up living in Italy with the Law, and falls in love with him, and it turns into a thriller movie!  After Damon kills Law when he tries to send him back home, Damon takes over his life and personality.  It was really suspenseful, and they travel all over Italy : to Rome, Venice, Naples, Positano, and Porto Ercole.

Stealing Beauty (1996)

I absolutely loved this movie.  It’s about a girl whose mother dies, and she goes to Italy to get her portrait made by old friends of her mother’s, and to find out who her father is.  She ends up learning so much about herself, life, love and family.  It’s a really beautiful movie, and I was more moved by it than I thought I would be.  Plus, it has some amazing shots of the glorious Tuscan hills.

Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)

So, I know this is a bit of a cliche as far as movies about Italy go, but it really is a super cute.  It’s about a writer who gets divorced, and buys a house in Italy, on an impulse, and finds happiness and gets over her marriage ending in Italy!  It’s so different from the book, but different in a good way!  It’s one of my mom’s all-time-favorites!

Angels & Demons (2009)

This movie was really good.  Not only did you get to see the amazing sites of Rome, but you also get a mini history/art history lesson on all of it!

The American (2010)

I really enjoyed this movie, but it is a little slow paced.  It’s about an assassin who is in Italy for one last job, and the town he stays in is beyond perfection!  It’s a decent movie, but worth watching for the scenery!

So there you have it, 5 movies that inspire me to travel to Italy!  I love to hear back from my readers about movies, books, tv shows, magazines, anything that has inspired you to travel, or even think about traveling!  I hope everyone is having a great week, and as always, thanks for reading!

My picks would be The Italian Job, the original 1969 version which was set in Turin. It has a sterling cast including Michael Caine, Noel Coward and Benny Hill and the chase scenes largely utilised Turin (although the sewer scenes were shot in England). One of my all-time favourite movies is Conversation Piece (1974), Visconti’s second-last film which followed Death In Venice (1971) and Ludwig (1972). It is set in Rome but shows little if nothing at all about the city. However, it’s a moving and quite disturbing portrayal of the collision between the old world and the new. Burt Lancaster, in one of his most striking roles, is a reclusive and lonely academic whose comfortable existence is shattered by a group of frivolous Eurotrash who rent out the apartment above his palazzo. Helmut Berger, a favourite of Visconti (Ludwig, The Damned) and Silvana Mangano co-star; I’ve seen this movie more than 20 times and enjoy it more with each viewing. Lancaster is just amazing.

Wow! Thank you so much for this amazing comment! I’m going to be able to do an entire post dedicated to these movies alone! I can’t wait to watch al of these! I love Michael Caine, and from your descriptions (and from interests we share like Hemmingway, Cuba, and Hepburn) I’m assuming I will love all of these movies as well! Be on the lookout for a Wanderlust Wednesday post dedicated to you! 🙂 Thanks as always for reading, and for the awesome recommendations! I just wrote them all down, and I’m going to start watching tomorrow!
