Words from Wanderers

IMG_6671

For me, travel inspiration comes in so many forms. I love to read about other people’s adventures, flip through their photographs, listen to stories of traveling friends, watch movies set in exotic places & many other things. One of the things that I love sharing are words from wanderers. Just quotes from interviews or books that make me feel so inspired to pack everything up and leave. So, here are some words from wanderers on experiences on the road.

Burkard

“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his place, his labor and his leisure, his mind and body, his information and his recreation, his love and religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at what ever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or play. To him he’s always doing both.”

James Michener

“Personally, I like going places where I don’t speak the language, don’t know anybody, don’t know my way around and don’t have any delusions that I’m in control. Disoriented, even frightened, I feel alive, awake in ways I never am at home.”

Michael Mewshaw

Cohen

⋘⋙

“Travel is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.”

Cesare Pavese

Johnson

⋘⋙

“I would like travelers, especially American travelers, to travel in a way that broadens their perspective, because I think Americans tend to be some of the most ethnocentric people on the planet. It’s not just Americans, it’s the biggest countries that tend to be ethnocentric or ugly. There are ugly Russians, ugly Germans, ugly Japanese and ugly Americans. You don’t find ugly Belgians or ugly Bulgarians, they’re just too small to think the world is their norm.”

Rick Steves

⋘⋙

Berry

⋘⋙

“The wish to travel seems to me characteristically human; the desire to move, to satisfy your curiosity or ease your fears, to henge the circumstances of your life, to be a stranger, to make a friend, to experience an exotic landscape, to risk the unknown, to bear witness to the consequences, tragic or comic, of the people possessed by the narcissism of minor differences.”

Paul Theroux

Awesome compilation, Paige. I like the emphasis on going outside your comfort zone and pushing yourself, of using travel to broaden your experiences and understanding on the world as it really exists (as opposed to what we think we know).
