Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

Wilmington was suggested to me by my friend, Liz, because she said that the beaches near there were less “touristy” than Myrtle Beach, which was my original beach destination in the Carolinas.  So, I took Liz’s word for it and I was not disappointed!

There are three beaches near Wilmington: Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach.  I randomly decided that Wrightsville Beach was the one I was going to visit and I was not disappointed.

It was a really cold day on the beach, but regardless I had a really amazing time walking along the shore, letting the water touch my toes from time to time and taking in the beauty of the Atlantic.  It was a really peaceful moment for me and the first time I had ever walked a beach alone, but I really loved being there in that moment.

There was this whole ridge of sea shells along the coast and the inner-child in me sifted through them for about 15 minutes before I realized I had this HUGE handful of shells and thought what the heck am I going to do with all these shells.  Haha  I was still the only one on the beach and decided I wanted to walk back towards the Pier.

The Johnni Mercer Fishing Pier wasn’t like the Jersey Shore Boardwalk, by any means,  but you could tell that it also was different in the summer season.  There were a couple of arcade games inside, but all I was interested in was walking out to the end, which cost 2 dollars to do.  The end of the pier was pretty incredible, though, not being a huge fan of water I can’t see the bottom of, the holes in the floor creeped me out if I paid too much attention to them.

Despite the cool temperature and even cooler breeze it was an absolutely beautiful day.  I loved the blue on blue of the sky and the sea.  It was really quite a site, and more than worth the 2 dollars.  I spent a bit of time at the end of the pier wishing it was summer, watching the boats and listening to the water hit against the pier.

By the end of my time there I had felt refreshed by the sun and sea, and managed to only carry a small collection of shells back to my car with me… but hey, it’s what you do at the beach, right?

so glad that you got there. Wrightsville Beach is one of my favorite spots in the world. Even during the summer since the island is small, it is not nearly as crowded as other beaches. The focus on local stores, several good restaurant options, easy access to fresh seafood, and the ability to easily ride a bike around make it fun any time during the year.

Winter is a great time to visit a beach town- best way to get the “locals only” experience.

I love the beach in the off season, in fact it’s the only time I go. Was just at Wrightsville in November and it was beautifully empty. Free parking, too!

I love how quiet and peaceful it is in the winter, but I hated the water being too cold to get in! Haha!

Nice to see that you enjoyed it there! I used to live there for 4 years and worked at the Holiday Inn Resort. My favorite part is the south side of the beach. It meets with the inlet waters and is calm, warmer, and not as crowded there. Hope you got to hit up the beach bars! Haha.

What a great place to live! When I go back this summer, I’ll have to go to the south side of the beach, and of course hit up the bars! HA! Thanks for reading and commenting!
