Yoga + Meditation Classes with Luang Prabang Yoga

Post Updated December 2022

When traveling to Laos’ spiritual center, it only seems appropriate to soak up as much of that as possible. Yoga is so much about connecting the mind and body, focusing on breathing, exercise and mindfulness. This seemed like the perfect place for Matt to try yoga for the first time. Plus, we were both able to do our first guided meditation. Luang Prabang Yoga offers classes at their adorable third-floor studio and on Utopia’s riverside deck. Luang Prabang Yoga provided us with a meditation class and yoga class so we could see just what they were all about.

Luang Prabang Yoga’s Sena Studio

Their third floor studio is absolutely darling. It sits above Sena Steak House – a restaurant on night market street. Go up to the third floor and leave your shoes on the step before going up to take your yoga or meditation class. The evening classes, which start at 5:30, take place in this studio.

Left: the front of the building // Right: inside the studio

Although Luang Prabang Yoga is available to locals and travelers alike, they understand that travelers are likely not traveling with their yoga materials. Because of this, they provide yoga mats, blocks and even cushions.

We were fortunate enough to be here for for their first guided meditation class – which was great timing because because my broken arm limited me a bit on taking yoga classes. Mira, one of the current teachers at Luang Prabang Yoga led an amazing guided meditation.

This is one of the many classes offered and the meditation class was 60 minutes. All of the classes are suitable for all levels of practitioners. I really loved that after the meditation Mira led a small discussion. This was an opportunity for newcomers to meditation to ask questions and meditators of all levels to compare experiences as well.

Their studio is such a beautiful, cozy space for yoga.

These classes are a great way to wind down, meditate or exercise after a day of exploring. Plus, it’s in a great location to explore the night market afterwards or have a bite to eat.

Sunrise Yoga at Utopia

UPDATE AS OF DECEMBER 2022 – Utopia is currently “temporarily closed”, therefore Luang Prabang Yoga is obviously not offering classes at this location, but below was our experience, and I hope that classes will resume eventually. I’ve messaged Utopia about info on if/when they’ll reopen, I’ll update this post when I hear back.

The sunrise yoga classes take place at Utopia, a bar, lounge, restaurant hybrid beloved by backpackers. At 7:30 before Utopia is open for business Luang Prabang Yoga teaches yoga on Utopia’s gorgeous deck that overlooks the gorgeous Nam Khan River.

Although I had to sit out the yoga class, it added an extra respect to Luang Prabang Yoga. Mira didn’t feel comfortable having me practice because she didn’t want to cause or further any injuries.

Mira started off her class with some nice stretching to warm up. This Hatha Flow class, like their others was open to any level of yogi.

Mira did a fantastic job of offering alternative poses for people who were more advanced. She did a great job of walking through to help people with poses and kept people from pushing themselves too far.

The location is absolutely stunning. Although there’s some noise, it’s still a gorgeous place to practice.

As I mentioned before, this was Matt’s first yoga class. He completely rocked it.

Matt’s Take on Luang Prabang Yoga

Matt said, “I thought it was really fun. I thought the setting was a perfect place for my first yoga class. The instructions were great for someone who had never done yoga before. I realized it’s no longer very easy for me to touch my toes.”

Will You do Yoga Again?

“Yeah, I would do yoga again. I was surprised at how difficult it was and I liked the challenge.”

Quick Info About Luang Prabang Yoga:

✈︎ Class Levels are for all levels. They’re catered a bit to beginners, but teachers offer alternative, more difficult moderations for more advanced yogis.
✈︎ Sticking around Luang Prabang for a while? The offer Loyalty Cards. If you take 5 classes, you get the sixth one free!
✈︎ They provide yoga mats, blocks + cushions.
✈︎ Luang Prabang Yoga also offers Yoga Retreats in Nong Khiaw, Laos as well as other destinations around the world.

Luang Prabang Yoga is the perfect place to try yoga for the first time, to expand your practice or try a different class than what you’re used to. I would highly recommend taking a class with Luang Prabang Yoga (or two or three) when you’re in town. I know that next on my list is trying out one of their Yoga Retreats the next time I’m in the area for one. I really felt like this is a must if you’re spending time in Luang Prabang.

I love doing yoga and meditation so this is right up my alley. It’s too bad you had a broken arm and couldn’t do the yoga but at least you could still participate in the mediation class. The deck overlooking Nam Khan River at the Sunrise Yoga looks like a perfect spot for yoga!

I was so disappointed, but my cast is off now, so just a few weeks of physical therapy and I’ll be back into yoga. I was so glad that I was able to do the meditation too! Both of their locations were great for different reasons!

I love yoga and practice several times a week. The yoga studio is so bright and cheerful. I tend to prefer indoor locations only because it helps my focus, but the outdoor sunrise yoga class looks great alongside the river in Luang Prabang. Too bad about your arm! Hope it’s on the mend. 🙂

I would love to go on this trip as yoga and meditation are my thing! Practicing yoga by the Nam Khan River must be so relaxing. I hope your broken arm recovers soon!

I really want to do yoga in an open space where you can really feel nature that’s why I prefer outdoors. It feels natural and authentic. Sunrise Yoga at Utopia > Studio for me.

Sounds like you and Matt had a great experience with Luang Prabang Yoga! I loved travelling around Laos and I can see how the laid back attitude of the country lends itself well to a bit of stretching ans meditation. Sorry to hear about your broken arm (probably wise that you didn’t attempt any Yoga yourself) – I hope you’re all healed up soon!

I regularly meditate but have not had the chance to incorporate that with yoga yet. This looks like a fantastic place to practice and especially overlooking the water. I’d love the sunrise class…the perfect way to start the day. Will keep this place in mind on my next travels to South East Asia!

I love beautiful outdoor settings for my yoga (and tai chi). It’s just not the same when you’re staring at a wall. I’m not too big on rising with the sun, but sunrise yoga on the Nam Khan River looks like the most serene way to start a day.

What an ideal location for doing Yoga. One of the requisites of Yoga practice is good surroundings which is necessary at least when the yoga Practitioner starts on the path of Yoga. Of course when you have mastered it you rise above all external requirements. Yoga at sunrise is the best thing and the most rejuvenating experiences. Would love to experience that.

Both locations of Luang Prabang Yoga look fantastic! I would be sure to book a morning class to be able to practice on the deck overlooking the Nam Khan River. What a way to start the morning!

Looking at these photos makes me realise that I really need to stretch out haha. I used to do a lot of yoga, but haven’t done it in a while now. I would love to do these classes in Laos, must be an incredible location to practise 😀 I have never tried yoga outside.

You are finding the coolest things to do in Luang Prabang! We did not know about this either! I love doing yoga in classes, and wish I would do more of it when we travel. That’s probably when I need it the most after getting stiff on long journeys. You’re making me want to go back!

I love instructors that offer different poses for the novice yogis. I have always been on-and-off with yoga so I’m always intimidated to join any class that is not a beginner’s class. I’ve never heard of meditation yoga and it sounds so interesting.

Yes, once you start doing yoga you realise its no child’s play. Its difficult, human bodies are inflexible by default. Forget stretching, the simple task of meditation is impossible for a newcomer. I can’t keep my eyes close and be at peace simultaneously, my mind explodes. I am glad to know, your instructor was knowledgeable. I cant comment on the noise pollution but by the look of it both the indoor and outdoor settings of the yoga studio look perfect.

Super! You are so brave to attend yoga despite broken arm. Kudos! It is said that even if you do only Pranayama and Surya Namaskar every day, it is quite beneficial. 🙂

I always try and squeeze in some kind of physical activity when travelling. Yoga in Luang Prabang looks like something I’d definitely like to do. Those people in the photographs look like they’re experts thought, and I’m not sure I’d keep up!

Taking yoga classes while on holiday is the perfect way to relax and unwind after rushing around sightseeing. I’m not sure if I wouldn’t be disturbed by the aroma of cooking steak, though…

I love yoga and guided meditations. It always calms me down. Doesn’t the location of the studio make it a bit noisy, though? When I’m doing yoga, I don’t want any distractions. I love that they provide yoga mats. I never carry one with me!

I keep wanting to take yoga classes. I have done some at home yoga, but this seems great. Maybe once I get back into doing it at home I will see about checking one out.

Loved your post and the random photos throughout the session. I did yoga for about 6 years and miss it so much. Definitely a great reminder that i need to add it back in my life. I have only done little bits of meditation but this sounds very intriguing.

What made you stop doing yoga? I definitely fell out of practice, and since I broke my arm last month, I’ve still got one more week before I can actually start introducing it back into my life. The meditation was absolutely amazing though.

Been wanting to do guided meditation for a while. I’ve heard great things about the mental effects. It seems like Laos is the perfect setting to dive deep into that practice.
