Why Do I Travel:
It’s right there in the title – for the love of wanderlust. I truly have a serious and incurable case of the travel bug. I travel simply because I love it. I come by it honestly, my parents always made family road trips to historic sites, theme parks, national parks + kitschy stops along the way a priority in our lives. They taught me to be independent, to love the world around me and have encouraged my sense of curiosity about all aspects of life. I’ve always been a person who wanted to learn more and I truly feel like I learn something new everyday while on the road. Travel has shaped + strengthened many of my relationships, given me confidence + boundless opportunities to learn, and it has given me memories that I never would have had without stepping outside my front door.
About the Wanderluster:
I have been traveling since I was 4-years-old and 22-years later I’ve never once looked back. My travel obsessions are taking road trips, hiking, experiencing new cultures, meeting new + interesting people, fumbling over new languages, making memories to last a lifetime, and of course photographing + writing about it all. I grew up in the Ozarks and stayed in Springfield, MO through college where I majored in cultural + linguistic anthropology and minored in Eastern religion.
After graduating, I spent some time traveling in the U.S. which led me to a move halfway across the country to Asheville, NC where I met the love of my life – my husband, Matt. We’re currently back in the Ozarks and will be for the next 10 months until we head off on our next big adventure. [We have one-way tickets to Bangkok in September!] We still call Asheville our home and plan to make it our permanent home-base in the near future.
Although travel is one of the biggest parts of my life other things I enjoy are puppy cuddles with our dog, Brady, doing all sorts of crafty things – crocheting being a top choice, drinking craft beer with friends, cooking and reading. I also really love music – live, blasted in the car or vinyl, I love it all.
How I Travel:
I have a really hard time trying to pick my true ‘travel niche’ because I love it all. I’m always up for new experiences and I feel just as home on an epic road trip, on the Inca Trail, at the MoMA or sitting in a temple in Laos.
As of now, I’ve been to all 50 states in the U.S., and most states I’ve been to at least twice. I’ve traveled in 20 countries and I am constantly planning my next adventure.
I’m a huge advocate for budget travel because I wish more people realized just how affordable travel can be! Plus, it’s what I feel most comfortable writing about because it’s how we’re able to travel so frequently. Sometimes it does take thinking outside the box + getting creative to pull it off, but it’s all so worth it to get to see the world. I believe this starts at home, and while my everyday life is way more boring than my time traveling, it’s worth it to have skipped that night out or that new phone when I’m spending months abroad at a time.
However, I also believe that if you save your money to get to exotic places you want to be able to do the things you came to see! After all, who wants to miss out on going up the Eiffel Tower or catching the sunrise at Angkor Wat?
Travel is what you make of it. If you go into with an open mind and sense of adventure, get ready for your life to be changed. Also, remember that everyone’s travel style + taste is different and it’s all about what you want to get out of it.
