I didn’t initially intend to do a photo essay solely dedicated to this one city. Yes, some of my favorite photos are from Chefchaouen, Morocco. However, it wasn’t until I did my more detailed post on Morocco’s blue city that I realized just how hard it was to choose a handful of favorites for that post. So, I decided to put together a post of my 45 favorite photos of Chefchaouen. Some are repeats from the longer post, but most are all new, never before seen photos by Matt of our favorite city in Morocco. Plus, at the bottom of the post, there are photography tips for your own trip to Chefchaouen!
Taking in the view of Chefchaouen from the abandoned Spanish mosque
This was my absolute favorite alleyway/door combo. All the patterns and shades of blue are just perfect.
This is one of the most popular alleyways because of the brightly colored pots the surround it.
This is one of my favorite photos just because of all the lines in this photo.
We heard some barking and couldn’t figure out where it was coming from until we looked up and found this rooftop pooch!
I love all of the vines stretching across this image. Plus, all the different shades of blue are just so wonderful.
Tips for Photographing Chefchaouen
⋙ BEAT THE CROWDS – If you want to get shots without the massive amounts of people, get up early in the morning. In addition to beating the crowds, the first hour or so after sunrise has some of the best lighting.
⋙ BE PATIENT – Even in the early morning, there will be other people into photography who are out and about. Most people take their photo and move on, but some will take what seems like forever to take a portrait. Just be patient and it will clear up.
⋙ GET TO THE SPANISH MOSQUE EARLY – That’s an incredibly popular spot for sunset, so be sure to get there early enough to have a spot to view the sunset.
⋙ WEAR SOMETHING THAT POPS – If you’re looking to take portraits, where a color that contrasts and will pop. White, yellow, black or pink especially pop! I wore a yellow kimono the day we went out solely for photos and I love the way they turned out.
⋙ BE WILLING TO TWEAK THOSE PHOTOS: We love using Lightroom to edit our photos. If you love our photos, check out our Wanderlust Essentials Presets that we use to edit our travel photos!
Chefchaouen is absolutely one of the most photogenic cities I’ve seen in the world. The beautiful blue-washed medina walls and blue doors are all so striking and each turn offers yet another opportunity for a photo. In addition to that, there are beautiful locals, view points and shops to explore as well! Hopefully you feel inspired to visit this blue mountain town.

October 22, 2018 at 2:52 amChefchaouen is lovely. We enjoyed visiting in August right after Eid so it was a lot calmer than we had been told to expect. We also really enjoyed hiking too the waterfalls and would highly recommend that to anyone.
