Today we leave for our “first leg” of Nomad Summer. Initially this was just the cute little name we gave the month of June because we are going to be spending the month in Colorado and Utah. But since that, we added a week in South Dakota and Wyoming this month, and we have North Carolina and camping weekends in July too! So, we’re going to be all over the US this summer so today kick off Nomad Summer for us.

As much time as we manage to spend in our camper, this is actually the longest trip we’ve taken in it since Big Bend National Park in March of 2024. We’re old pros at weekend or long-weekend trips, but it’s shockingly been over a year since we prepped for a week-long trip and I have to tell you, it’s been so much fun! It’s the first trip like this in our new camper after upgrading last spring – which was partially a move that we made after that time in Big Bend and it’s been a game-changer.

This weekend we picked up the camper and brought it to our house. Matt had a little project to do for the weekend. The under-sink storage had broken out a couple camping trips ago. It had been glued up with no supports underneath. So, Matt made little support beams to protect the pipes and tubes under the sink and replaced that piece of wood to create the shelf. So, we now have better storage for our water and drinks again.

I also have discovered that the storage in the kids’ room is really great for learning materials, toys, etc, but it isn’t the best for clothes. I’m going to maybe rework where and how I store things on this trip, but until then I have a potentially temporary solution: I have a good-sized rubbermaid container that I’m using as clothing storage. It’s easy to place up on top of the top bunk.

Lastly, the other big thing we’re actually doing is prepping food. We can sometimes find ourselves being a little lazy about this, but we’re determined to make our camping trips (especially as they get longer and longer) as affordable as possible. We meal planned for the week, shopped, and I got 5 pounds of carrots peeled and cut, homemade cheesy ranch dip, made sloppy joes and we’re going into this trip so optimistic about only eating out a couple of times at most!
I’ve been trying to do more camper diaries this year, to share more about what it looks like to travel as often as we do, in a camper, as a family of four – especially with toddlers in tow! We are just really in love with this method of traveling and we love to show others how we’re doing it. I can’t wait to share more in-depth how we prep for a big trip – our next trip is 24 days – and more notes from the road!
