Fisher Towers Trail – Moab, Utah

Fisher Towers Trail leads to a series of delicately rugged formations that seem like they’re just reaching up from the ground. These are the Fisher Towers. This rock fin formation is one of the best places to feel small in the best way. The tallest of the towers (Titan Tower) measures an insane 900ft from top to bottom. The trail leads you up, around and through pinnacles along cliff edges and ends with an insane view of the towers with the Colorado River curving in the background.

One of the things I love about the Moab area is that we always find a new trail to hike that blows our minds. Fisher Towers was that hike for us this trip. Fisher towers is located just east of Moab and it’s famous not only for the stunning hiking trail that overlooks these insanely massive towers, but also for rock climbers! I love that, especially early in the day, you’ll get to see climbers on their way up and even perched atop formations that seem impossible to stand on top of!

Quick Info About Fisher Towers Trail

PARKING IS LIMITED: The parking area here is not large by any means. Because both climbers
CONSIDER TRAVEL INSURANCE: I’m a big advocate for travelers insurance (World Nomads is what we use and love) because I’ve had to use it multiple times while traveling, one time was during an easy hike – I slipped and broke my arm in Thailand.

Getting to the Fisher Towers Trail Trailhead

From Moab, you drive toward Arches National Park, but before crossing the Colorado River, turn right on to Scenic Highway UT-128. You follow this road for 21 miles. There are several scenic viewpoints of the Colorado River along here, you should definitely check out, but perhaps do it on the way back because the parking area at the trailhead is fairly small. The trailhead will be on the right side of the road and is well-marked. You go down a short dirt road to the small parking area and campground. There is a pit toilet here at the trailhead.

Hiking Fisher Towers Trail

The trail starts looking at Fisher Towers. Before setting off, you should take a minute to really look at the different towers above you and see if you see rock climbers making their way to the top. Sometimes, you hear them before you see them. It’s cool to get perspective of how big the towers are and you know which ones to look at while you hike so you can maybe see what looks like a teensy ant standing atop these massive formations.

Very soon after beginning the trail, you’ll find yourself weaving through the massive towers. The trail is well-trafficked and there are cairns on the parts that aren’t dirt and gravel to help guide the way. Hiking through this trail gives those feeling small feelings. The good ones that leave you humbled by our amazing planet. The walls surrounding you look like intricate towers draped with orange-red cloth. The way that mud has caked and formed over the towers just give it an almost shroud-like appearance. It’s unreal.

For the Love of Wanderlust Trip: If you’re a petroglyph-lover like I am, you’ll be elated when you see signs for Ancient Art. It wasn’t until we left without seeing any petroglyphs that I realized that’s the name of one of the towers, not a navigational sign to some sweet rock art. Haha

Eventually, relatively near the end of the trail, there’s a ladder portion of the hike. The ladder takes you down to the trail on the way to the end of the trail. There’s a handle mounted in the stone as well, that helps get onto the ladder. Sometimes these added features can seem a little bit sketchy, but this ladder was very secure and Matt even did it with our Deuter Kid Comfort on.

The final viewpoint, past all the towers, is unreal. Because you’re past the major rock fin that makes up the backbone of the Fisher Towers, the landscape beyond it really opens up to the rugged brush-covered mountains and mesas beyond. However, the true beauty comes looking back the way you came. This vantage point of the Fisher Towers is astonishing and behind them you can see the gentle curves of the Colorado River and the mesas beyond the river. It’s a southwest landscape that you’ll truly never, ever forget.
