Mulafossur Waterfall – Faroe Islands

When planning the perfect visit to the Faroe Islands, you’ll undoubtedly come across a photo of the iconic Mulafossur waterfall. This beautiful waterfall is one of the many, many examples of outstanding natural beauty that you can find on this tiny, isolated archipelago. While this might not be one of the largest or most powerful waterfalls in the world, its scenic location makes it near the top my list of favorite waterfalls.

A Little About Mulafossur Waterfall

Mulafossar waterfall was the very first place we visited in the Faroe Islands. We stayed on the island of Vagar because of its amazing natural sites (like this one) and its proximity to the airport. In fact, Mulafossar waterfall is only a 20 minute drive from the airport. Mulafossar waterfalls sits just outside the teeny tiny town of Gasadalur.

Getting to Mulafossur Waterfall

Like I said, visiting this waterfall is simply a short drive from the airport. This scenic drive is actually relatively new. The one-way tunnel you drive through to get to Mulafossur Waterfall has only been there since 2004. Before then you could only access this waterfall and the surrounding town by helicopter, boat or a really long hike. Luckily, now it’s a quick and easy drive.

The drive itself to Mulafossur waterfall is really beautiful. You drive through a couple of small towns and along the coastline. If there’s been plenty of rain, you’ll get to see several small waterfalls cascading down the crevasses of the mountain. So, it makes the 20 minute drive even more worth it.

Once you get through the one-way tunnel, the parking area for Mulafossur waterfall will be the first pullout on the left. There are several places to park. There’s also a paved path that leads you right to the viewpoint of this glorious waterfall.  The path does have an offshoot to the right that leads to a small wooden bridge that goes right over the water and you can stand very near the point where the water flows over the cliff. If you continue straight, you’ll see a a little roped-off viewing area. This is where you get the stunning view of this waterfall.

Depending on the weather, your view can change drastically. We came here one night after a massive storm and the waterfall was flowing really thick and full. The next day it was the more-photographed small, delicate stream. Another thing that adds to the beauty are the adorable, brave little sheep that scale the cliffside on teensy ledges like it’s nothing.

This meant that the waves crashing were, of course, much bigger. When they crashed into these alcoves it made this soothing, yet incredibly powerful roar.

In addition to the beauty of the Mulafossur Waterfall and rugged coastline, the mountains you pass and fields of stunning green grass and wildflowers all add to the experience. Part of what makes a visit to the Faroe Islands so incredibly is everything we saw was just beautiful, and Mulafossur Waterfall was at the top of that list.

Making a stop at this iconic Faroese waterfall is an absolute must for anyone who wants to visit the Faroe Islands. If you’re staying on the Island of Vagar, I highly recommend going at least twice, in different weather, just to see how much a seeming slight change in weather can create a totally different experience. Plus, it’s something that truly anyone can see and experience now because the walk to view it is very short.
