Is It Possible to Have a Relaxing Vacation In a City, Or Is It an Urban Legend?

It might sound like a contradiction in terms, but when you are looking for a vacation destination where you cannot hear anything but a pin drop, you tend to go for somewhere relaxing, like some areas of natural beauty, or somewhere that is so far removed from a city center. The humdrum of traffic and the sound of footsteps thundering on a sidewalk is the last thing you want to hear when going on a relaxing vacation, but there are ways for you to treat urban city centers like you are on a relaxing vacation! Intrigued? Let’s break it down for you.

SET THE MOOD

If you don’t think you’re going to have a relaxing vacation in a city, then you won’t! It’s best for you to use the journey time to get into vacation mode. Instead of panicking about the travel situation, relax, get yourself a drink or a cup of coffee. You can make a relaxing playlist or find a podcast that distracts you. It’s best to just go with the flow. If you plan on driving, don’t go during rush hour, and do whatever you can to make the journey easy.

PICK THE RIGHT CITY (OR EVEN THE RIGHT PART)

Some cities bring the fear of God into us, so make sure that you choose one that’s appropriate for your temperament. New York is a fantastic place, but if you head deep into Times Square, you might find yourself stressed out by the sheer volume of traffic. Instead, you may want to head to the East Village, somewhere that’s got a more relaxed pace of life. Or go European; somewhere like Milan comes with an obligatory glass of wine and aperitivo whenever you sit down in any eating establishment, which is guaranteed to put you in vacation mode!

GET THE RIGHT ACCOMMODATION

If you are trying to make your vacation as cheap as possible, you might find yourself less relaxed if you’ve picked a hostel that you’re sharing with dozens of other guests. Instead, take some time and look at the best places for you to stay that can relax and rejuvenate you. The Marriott Vacation Club Pulse, New York City, isn’t as active as the name suggests! It’s a relaxing place, not too far away from all the city center attractions. If need be, start saving well in advance of heading on vacation, so you can reap the benefits of luxury accommodation. And, with most luxurious accommodations, you’ve got access to spa facilities, and that’s always a good thing! Still not practical for your budget? At least spring for that private room in your hostel.

PLAN OUT SOME LEISURELY ACTIVITIES

When you’re traveling to a specific city, there are obviously things that have drawn you there. So, find your top things to do and make that a the must of a day. Only pick things that will keep you in the flow of your vacation mindset though. Plus, most cities have amazing green spaces that will feel like you’re not even in a big city.

BUT DON’T PLAN EVERYTHING

The temptation is often to fill up your schedule with museums, art galleries, tourist spots, and so on. Apart from maybe something like a show that you really want to take in, if you want to relax properly, going with the flow and feeling your way through the vacation may be the most relaxing thing you can do. You are there to relax, and not to keep yourself busy.

You can treat an urban landscape like a vacation because it’s all about that relaxing mindset. Sometimes, just being where you can find any and all creature comforts you could imagine is enough to fully relax.
