When I got to Asheville, Liz and Lina had put together a little welcome home gift bag for me and this book was in it, and it was the perfect gift for me!
Rita Golden Gelman decided that she was living a life that she didn’t love, so when her marriage started falling apart she went to Mexico and hasn’t stopped traveling since. This book was incredibly inspiring, and I felt empowered reading it. I love her mindset and the way she looked at the importance of travel. Rita describes her experiences in Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Israel, Galápagos Islands, Indonesia, United States, Canada, New Zealand and Thailand. It’s a beautiful story of her journeys across the world and also her journey through life as a Female Nomad.
I thought I’d share a few of the especially inspiring quotes from this book:
***
“It’s exciting to be exploring a world I know nothing about, discovering new smells, and moving though a scene where I am a barely noticed minority of one, swallowed up by the crowd.”
***
“I have tasted the life I want… I resolve to continue exploring the world, ignoring the ‘they’ who define how people should live.”
***
“But no matter how often I ask myself if I’m running away from something, I always get the same answer. No, I’m not running away. On the contrary. I’ve discovered a new way to live… I’m embracing lids, not running away from it.”
***
I think every female traveler needs to pick up a copy of this fantastic book!

July 7, 2014 at 6:49 pmI’m all for the female adventurer, but this book was so preachy to me! Instead of sharing her experiences with the reader she seemed more bent on convincing them of her ‘one-ness’ with those she was meeting – and by that i mean stating it as fact, not implying it or letting readers perceive it on their own.
If you liked this book you might like cheryl strayed’s ‘wild’ though – not as exotic of a location but still empowering.
