Ararat — A Dormant Volcano

The highest volcanic massif in the Armenian Highlands and one of the most beautiful mountains in the world is located in the eastern part of Turkey, in the Iğdır Province, near the border with Armenia and Iran. Ararat is a stratovolcano. According to legend, it was Ararat that Noah’s Ark came to rest on.
The mountain consists of two dormant volcanic cones joined at the base: Little Ararat and Greater Ararat. The summit of the latter is 5,165 meters (almost 17k feet!) above sea level, making it the highest point in all of Turkey. The slopes are covered with snow and glaciers, the longest of which is the St. Jacob Glacier, stretching for 2 km (a little over a mile!). Little Ararat is covered with a very thick layer of ash, tephra, and solidified lava, so there is very little vegetation on it. However, in some places, you can find wild grapes and birch trees.
The climate at the top of the mountain is quite harsh, with constant winds at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. Even in summer, the temperature does not rise above 50 degrees F during the day. The most comfortable weather on Ararat is in July, when the air warms up to about 77 degrees F.

There are legends in the country that a monstrous boar used to live on it, which was killed by a warrior named Diarmaid with his own tusk. Ben Balben is composed almost entirely of limestone and is more than 320 million years old.
