When it comes to unique travel experiences, there are plenty of them to try. From specific destinations, to activities and even types of travel, you’ll find something new that pushes your boundaries or just simply offers up a new experience. Check out some of my favorite travel experiences I think you should try, and some that I’m pushing myself to try!
Do Something You’re Afraid Of
We all have something we’re afraid of. For me, it’s the ocean, so every time I’m near the beach I try to push myself to swim, kayak, snorkel or something. I’d rather bungee jump or climb a mountain with a steep drop-off than jump in the ocean. However, I think it’s really good to push yourself and do something that challenges you.
Pay Homage to Something You Love
This doesn’t have to be related to family history or a major monument, or even religion. It can be anything. Matt and I found ourselves paying homage to one of my all-time favorite book series, Harry Potter, while traveling across Europe, but especially in the UK. It ended up being something that I saw as more of a challenge to find, but in a super fun way!
Cruises
This is one of the things I’ve yet to try. As long as you don’t get seasick (which is one of the many reasons I haven’t tried it), a cruise is certainly a unique way of traveling. With most cruises, they’ll stop off at multiple places and allow you to explore the various ports on the ship’s course. This sounds like a really great option if you’re looking for something relaxing and easy or traveling with a large group. I think I’ll start with a river cruise.
Rent A Boat
Sticking with the theme of boats, why not hire one? If you have the skills and experience of steering and looking after a boat, you can always check out a yacht charter to see what’s available around the area you are staying. My cousin has been working on getting his sailing license and I totally want to go on an Adriatic adventure when he’s ready to set sail with a group!
Visit a Remote Destination
Sometimes, it’s fun to explore a place that people have either never heard of, or that it takes a bit more effort to get there. We found that in the Faroe Islands. It’s so fun to get to tell people about this place for the very first time. While it’s growing in popularity, it’s fun to not outnumber the locals in most places we visited.
Participate in a Local Festival
This is something that I’ve been fortunate enough to sort-of stumble into. Two of the times I’ve visited Thailand, I’ve happened to be there for some of their major festivals. My favorite of these was Loi Krathong which is a beautiful festival where you send baskets of blessings, incense + candles downriver.
Hot Air Balloon Rides
A hot air balloon ride is the perfect way of seeing the world from a different viewpoint and it’s certainly on my bucket list! Apparently, there are also some great health benefits to riding a hot air balloon. It can boost your endorphins, increase your heart rate and the quality of oxygen up there will be much better.
Book Yourself An Upgrade
Sometimes it’s nice to splurge out and treat ourselves and why not? Traveling first class should be tried by everyone, whether that’s by train or plane. Although, I haven’t splurged on flying first class, we did fly home on economy plus last fall and it was a truly incredible way of ending our big with a bang. There was an amazing amount of leg room, wine galore, delicious food and just stellar service. One day I’ll try an upgrade to first class.
There are so many unique travel experiences, just waiting to be tried out so next time you book a holiday, why not try something new?

December 12, 2018 at 4:12 pmGreat post. Pushing boundaries should always be part of traveling. Having said that, I’ll admit to only having clicked on your post because your photo of Utopia bar in Laos brought a smile to my face. I spent many an afternoon there when I needed a break from the constant boundary pushing I had been doing in my SEA trip. 🙂
