Deuter Kid Comfort – Toddler Hiking Carrier Review

Matt and I were both hikers even before we met. After getting together, our love for it only grew. So, it seemed only natural that when Charleigh outgrew her infant carrier, we would need to do some serious investigating into which toddler hiking carrier would be perfect for us. After a few days of research we landed on the Deuter Kid Comfort and eagerly awaited its arrival to hit the trails with Charleigh in tow. Well… actually, with her strapped to our backs.

Quick Info About the Deuter Kid Comfort

PRICE POINT: You can find a Deuter Kid Comfort on Amazon for $320. This is a big ticket item, but we love it so much we’ve bought two! One for each kid!
WHEN CAN MY KID RIDE IN ONE? Your child should be able to sit up independently before putting them in a Deuter Kid Comfort. The age on that varies.
MAX CARRY WEIGHT: 48 pounds, which includes the 7lbs 2oz pack. Account for any gear you’ve packed as well.
OUR FAVORITE FEATURES: The comfortable padded belt and straps. I never get chafed and realistically have yet to be sore from the actual pack – the weight of the kids can be hard before getting used to carrying them. I also love the kickstand so that we can have her propped on breaks without having to get them out!
CHARLEIGH’S FAVORITE FEATURE: Without a doubt, the thing Charleigh loves most is the super-padded braces all around her head. No matter which direction she lays her head, when it’s nap-time on the trail, she has a comfy place to rest.
ALTERNATIVE FOR BABY NOT QUITE READY FOR A DEUTER KID COMFORT: I use(d) this LILLEbaby 4 in 1 carrier. I loved it up to a certain weight and mobility before I needed something heftier for trails.

Our Experiences with Our Deuter Kid Comfort

We got Charleigh a Deuter Kid Comfort just before her first birthday. We instantly fell in love with it. I carried her with ease and comfort on many trails before I got pregnant again, and then Matt started carrying her on our hikes, also with ease and comfort.

Changing the tightness of the adult’s straps and waistband is quite easy, which is great for switching back and forth between two people who carry the kids.In fact, my dad has even carried Charleigh in the Deuter. Although, now that we’ve got two kids and two Deuters, it seems Matt and I will just each have our own carrier.

The kid comfort has a handy pouch on the waistband, which I love. I put my phone, keys and a small snack in it. On the back, below where the kids sit, there’s a good-sized open pouch. We put our water bottles in it as well as the other things we might need for the kiddos.

Rifle Falls State Park, Colorado

I love that the Deuter Kid Comfort comes with a sun shade. It’s great, not only to protect their skin from harmful rays, but it’s nice for parents too. The Deuter sits higher than us, so we don’t always know when a branch might be a little low for the kiddos. Luckily, with the shade on, it lets us know when we need to squat a bit lower.

One year in, we’ve taken Charleigh hiking in Missouri, Arkansas, North Carolina, Utah and Colorado with our beloved Deuter Kid Comfort!

Who Do We Recommend Get A Deuter Kid Comfort?

Fisher Towers Trail – Moab, Utah

If you just occasionally go on a hike every now and then (like a few times a year), I don’t know that I would invest in a Deuter Kid Comfort, just because it is quite a bit a of money. But if you’re a person whose trips often revolve around hiking, like ours do, or you take a lot of weekend hikes, like we also do, I would highly recommend the Deuter Kid Comfort. Like I mentioned above, we love these so much that we own two of them, one for each kid!

If you have an infant and love to hike, I highly recommend the LILLEbaby carrier. I used it for Charleigh first and am currently using it for Liam until he grows into his brand new Deuter eagerly awaiting him.
