Street Art of Portugal: A Photo Essay

In the last few years, I’ve grown to greatly love and appreciate street art. I almost make a game out of “collecting” it. (Simply by taking photos, of course.) I was blown away by the street art of Portugal because some of it is just so incredibly impressive. We found that Lisbon had a lot of tagging, which I don’t especially care for, especially when it’s all across its historical buildings and fountains, but then you turn a corner and you see amazing murals and other small works of street art. I thought I’d share a small photo essay of the photos street art I collected in Portugal.

STREET ART IN LISBON

This beautiful mural was in the Mouaria district. Our tour guide pointed it out to us on our Lisbon Food Tour.

STREET ART IN PORTO

I loved this series of murals. ‘Where does our body end?’ it asks.

These were two of my very favorites. They’re like earth goddesses. Apparently, Costah’s street art is all over Porto, and I wish I had been able to collect and see even more!

Left is another example of street art by Costah // The right two were actually across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia

STREET ART IN THE ALGARVE [lagos + faro]

I loved stumbling across these two very similar pieces of street art. They weren’t very big, but they’re beautiful. The one on the left was in Faro and the one on the right was in Lagos. So, I’m curious to see just how many there are. Clearly at least 5 others since these are numbers 6 and 7. I’d love to find all of these blooming hearts.

As you can see, the street art of Portugal is thriving. There are so many talented artists doing some incredible things. I’m so grateful for these artists who are willing to share their creations with the world for free.

It’s fun when you can go through and make a photo essay to just trigger those memories. Great times!

Wow! That is some really cool street art. Even I have begun to love and appreciate street art since the last few years and make it a point to explore the local street art scene wherever I visit. From my recent travels I loved the street art in Bristol and in Krakow.

I love Portugal, and it’s one of my favourite countries in Europe that I’d happily move to. The street art is so impressive around the country, and I love your photos! My favourite has to be the woman with the spray can in Lisbon. It’s colourful and vibrant!

I’m with you! Portugal is one of my faves! I love that one too! Apparently it was commissioned, or so our Food Tour Guide told us.

There are so many to choose from but my favorite is of the figure looking at his phone and an Instagram “like”. We are so consumed with our social media and it’s interesting to see artists’ perspectives (both good and bad) on this.

I love that one too. It’s definitely interesting to think about society’s obsession with social media in reference to street art, in addition to everything else while traveling. Great point!

I love street art, it is soooo much more interesting than just a boring wall! I think my favourite here is the rabbit on the corner. Hunting out street art is a new hobby of mine 🙂

We are always looking for street art when we travel. We saw some in Portugal but your selection is far wider than we saw. We too were quite disturbed by how much tagging there was. Even if it is colourful, it is not art. I loved your mix of serious and playful street art. We found rooster art everywhere we went in Portugal. Good to see some new examples. The rabbit on the corner is quite catching. When we went to the Azores, we found lots of whale themed street art. Glad I caught this post. I am going to share this post with a friend who has an IG account on street art.
