When Travel Goes Wrong

Traveling is one of the greatest joys of my life. I am always telling exciting tales about the experiences and memories I’ve collected during my world travels. While I often give tips and advice, today’s tip is one of the biggest travel tips I can give you.  I wanted to talk to you about something I’ve become a major advocate for: travel insurance. After having the scariest moment of my travels (and life), having travel insurance through World Nomads was the biggest travel-related blessing of the year for Matt and me. Thankfully we were prepared for when travel goes wrong.

When Travel Goes Wrong (A Little Background)

My regular readers may remember that Matt and I intended to travel for 12 months starting last fall. In August we started our year of travel and we kicked it off in Southeast Asia. After about 4 months abroad I started to have abdominal pain. Matt, luckily, insisted that I go to the doctor and have it looked at. It turned out that I had a fairly large cyst on my right ovary. It was right next to the main artery which meant flying home could’ve caused torsion or a serious bleed. After giving bedrest a shot for a couple of days, the worst scenario quickly became my reality. My cyst had grown even larger and I was going to have to have an emergency cystectomy in Bangkok, Thailand.

The same day as my follow-up, I found myself getting prepped for surgery and then I was separated from Matt and wheeled to a dressing room where panic slowly set in. I’m not a super laid back person when it comes to medical issues. I tend to think worst-case scenario. All of these terrifying thoughts like losing an ovary or not waking up streamed through my mind. I sobbed as I changed into my hospital gown and was then wheeled into the operating room, totally awake and alert. I pulled myself up on to the table and lay there, tears streaming down my face, as I stared into the operating lights and at the nurses cleaning the surgical equipment.

Luckily, everything went well. I’m here, ovaries in tact. Plus, my amazing surgeon skillfully removed the original cyst along with two others. The only things I was stressed about afterward were ending my trip early and the $6k bill. Luckily, thanks to World Nomads, these both ended up being less of a hassle because of the policy we selected.

The Claims Process

Matt was amazing and took care of the entire claims process. Luckily for him, the process was extremely easy to do online. Upon logging in the website has a “Make a Claim” button and you simply follow the prompts. My health insurance, which you have to try to make a claim to first, actually denied my surgery. Even with that, I took the doctor’s notes, photos from my surgery, etc and World Nomads approved my claim, no questions asked. We so appreciated that World Nomads stood behind their policies and didn’t make us jump through a million hoops. Just to prove that this wasn’t a one-time fluke of awesome-ness, they were amazingly helpful and covered all my medical expenses when I broke my arm in Thailand last summer too. Which leads my to my next point…

Why I Love World Nomads

Climbing Mount Phousi in Luang Prabang is a must for any visit to LPB

I didn’t always travel with travel insurance. It wasn’t until I hiked the Inca Trail in 2014 that I started using it and from the beginning I’ve used World Nomads, and I’ve used it on every international trip since. It’s loved by several bloggers and even big brands like Lonely Planet. So, I felt confident using them because it’s only for an emergency, right? And those never happen, right?

Now that I’ve had the ‘When Travel Goes Wrong’ moments, I’m so relieved that World Nomads is who I was covered by.

HERE’S WHY:

THEIR POLICIES ARE AFFORDABLE – I’m often amazed at the affordability of their policies. Whether your trip is 1 week or 6 months, the rate is reasonable.

⋙ THEIR WEBSITE IS USER-FRIENDLY – I’ve never once been on their website and wanted to pull my hair out or cry (you know the sites I’m talking about). Instead, everything is cut and dry and the plans are in easy-to-understand terms.

⋙ THEY CARE – Like I said earlier in this post, they covered my surgery when my health insurance called my emergency cystectomy “elective”. Trust me, the last thing I wanted to do in Thailand was have surgery; it was not by choice. World Nomads covered not only the medical expenses, but the flights back to Missouri to spend my recovery at home.

⋙ THEY BELIEVE IN SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL AND GIVING BACK – World Nomads believes in making a difference. They give you the opportunity to make a micro donation when you check out that goes to non-profits and charities that help change lives. Plus, they have a blog with different tips and options for sustainable travels.

YOU CAN EVEN START A POLICY WHILE TRAVELING – Are you currently traveling without insurance and realized you need coverage before travel goes wrong for you? You can do that! (See policy details, of course.)

Obviously, when traveling, you hope that nothing goes wrong. It can be tempting to skip the travel insurance when you’ve purchased it a dozen times and never needed to use it. Let me tell you, when travel goes wrong, you’ll be glad World Nomads is on your side.

I really will not travel without a travel insurance policy now. It was such a game-changer for us last trip that it was worth the cost of all the times that travel doesn’t go wrong.

I had never heard of travel insurance, but am glad you wrote about it. Insurance is one of those things that you hope to never use and can’t buy it when you need to use it. I am going to look into World Nomads, thanks for sharing.
P.S. Glad your surgery went well

You’re absolutely right that you hope you never have to use it, but it’s so great to have it when you do! World Nomads was just so good to us, I want to share it with others. And thank you. I am too. It was very scary.

I always say and live by the motto ” If you cant afford travel insurance you cant afford to travel”. I always say though read your policy terms and conditions because as a rule most insurance companies will try and duck a payout

That’s a great motto. Absolutely know what’s covered in your plan. We acted accordingly with several things because of this. Luckily, World Nomads was great and didn’t push back at all on any of the claims we had to make last year. They were amazing.

Very simply, travel Insurance should be a mandatory and affordable add-on for all who travel abroad. Your example makes that very clear.

What a difficult experience to go through! Insurance companies can be so cruel. It’s great to know that World Nomads was there for you. I have actually been looking for travel insurance for a trip to Eastern Europe this summer, so I will use your link since you recommend them so highly.

It really was such a great experience each time I had to use them. We had such a negative experience with our actual health insurance that we were worried about trying to handle these claims. It was such easy communication with them and as long as you know what you’re covered for in your policy (like you aren’t driving a motorbike that you don’t have a license for, etc) it’s so east. Thank you so much in advance for using my link too! It’s so appreciated ❤️

When I think about travel insurance, the only thing that comes into mind is this question “Will the plane crash?” and to me, that possibility is so absurd and if in case it happens, I don’t think the insurance will help much. If it is my time, it is my time. BUT…. Because of this post I am reminded that “Oh, travel insurance also covers medical conditions or illnesses, that’s right…” And that could really be helpful. That means you have access to medical attention at any time anywhere you are, even when you don’t have cash on hand.

Thank you! This is very enlightening. I hope you feel better now.

That’s so funny. A plane crash is probably the last thing I think of for the insurance – it’s so funny how we all think of different things, isn’t it? I always thought of theft. Then, I have to have all these medical issues and prove myself wrong. Haha

I love World Nomads! I have never had to file a claim, but am confident that they will be very helpful if I ever have to file one. So glad you were ok and that you had an amazing doctor!

Oh my, glad you are ok after that emergency procedure in Thailand! It’s already tough enough to have to go through that at home, let alone do it abroad! Early on in my traveling days, I didn’t get travel insurance but nowadays, my viewpoint has changed. And it has paid off in many instances, especially flight delays and luggage issues.

Thank you very much. It was definitely tough. It’s amazing how we scrimp on things in younger days, but learn to see the value. I think most people have found at least one point in their travels that it would’ve paid off to have insurance.

Wow, I can’t believe that happened to you! And I’m so glad you turned out okay. What a scary experience, even if that were to happen at home! I’ve heard a lot about World Nomads. I’m pinning this so others can learn too

Thank you so much. It was definitely a scary experience, but I was so grateful that at least we weren’t out the money for the procedure and flights we missed/flight we had to buy to get home. Thanks for pinning! <3 I hope this helps other travelers too!

A cyst sounds so scary, good that World Nomads accepted your claim. I always use travel insurance for that. I have insurance in the country I live in now, because it is cheaper than by from abroad like World nomads. I am so scared of this kind of stuff. I have had problems myself where I cant get cover from the insurance on certain things or the specific clinic is too far away. In my country, Norway those things are free, but not abroad and many people dont think about that. Thank you for sharing your story.

We had health insurance in the US too, but unlike Norway, the insurance itself is expensive, and the procedure still isn’t anywhere close to free. We were so grateful that this was covered because my US health insurance denied my claim.

OMG, sorry to hear about the incident in Bangkok. It must have been daunting to do a surgery in a foreign country! This proves once again having travel insurance is so important. Glad that your claim process was so easy and smooth!

Thanks, Cat. It was very scary – surgery in general is terrifying, but doing so in a country that I didn’t speak the language was even more intense. It really was smooth and made me an even bigger lover of World Nomads, for sure.

That’s so scary! I’m so glad that your surgery went well, and that your travel insurance was such a breeze to deal with in what was undoubtably a stressful time.
